Originally recorded by Jim Faris at the MGM Cartoon Studio in Culver City, California between 1940s and 1950s, this sound effect was originally an MGM sound effect that debut in "Busy Buddies" (a Tom & Jerry short) on May 4, 1956. It was mainly used in more Tom & Jerry cartoons, as well as Droopy cartoons.

After the two men lost their jobs at MGM (due to the shutdown of the MGM cartoon studio), they took the sound to their animation studio "Hanna-Barbera Productions" (along with several other MGM cartoon sounds) and would use the sound in most of their cartoons (like The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and Goober and the Ghost Chasers), from which the sound made its way to other studios in the 1960s. It's also the second most common zip sound effect (behind Sound Ideas, ZIP, CARTOON - BIG WHISTLE ZING OUT) used in many cartoons (like A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Garfield and Friends, Midnight Patrol: Adventures in the Dream Zone, Rocko's Modern Life, SpongeBob SquarePants, What's New, Scooby-Doo?, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Mixels and many others.) and many live-action children shows (like Sesame Street, Barney & Friends, Big Time Rush, LazyTown and The Wiggles.)

A reversed variation of this sound called ZIP, CARTOON - QUICK WHISTLE ZIP IN 02, and it is a Hanna-Barbera sound, but was not featured in the library, ZIP, CARTOON - RICCO ZIP IN 02 (R & B) can be found on Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends Sound Effects Library. Another variation of this sound called Cartoon Streaks 1 SS016501 can be found on The Super Single Volume 1, which is exactly the same sound effect. Even a lower pitched and reversed sound effect variation of this sound ZIP, CARTOON - QUICK WHISTLE ZIP IN, LOW exists and debuted in the Droopy cartoon "Blackboard Jumble" (1957). There's also an anime version of this sound effect called H-B ZIP, CARTOON - DOUBLE ZIP, which was mainly used in some anime media.
