Lovely World: Future, originally released as simply Future, is the fourth season of the Lovely World animated television series, created by John Collins. It was co-produced by Starlight Productions and animated by Cinebolt Productions and Brightmyth Film Studios. Instead of being based on or inspired by the two books that the previous three seasons were based on, the series would start using original concepts and story specifics with this season. Furthermore, Cody Campbell, the new showrunner, took over for John, who had quit the program to concentrate on writing books.

The season originally began broadcasting both in the United States on Children's Avast Television and in Bloxanada on Avast, respectively on November 16, 2013, and ended on November 1, 2014, containing 47 episodes and six specials. The series follows the adventures of Edward, the main character, who is sent to an in-digital world and must survive while creating his own "world". Throughout the show, Edward makes friends with Michael, Leo, and Kamila, and together they set out on a global adventure to meet new people and discover more about the process of building their world.

In this season, there are a total of over three storylines: the group's continued construction of their new village and the introduction of the sheeps, who end up becoming Edward's friends, are the subjects of the first storyline; their new adventure searching for supplies for their village is the subject of the second; their return to the village and the introduction of new villagers, along with a minigame special, is the subject of the third and final one. The season, like the previous three in the series, was developed by the "Original Series" production crew. The writing team started working on plot drafts for the next two storylines, which were used for the final edition of the season, during the production of the third season, when the idea for the first storyline was still in the early stages of development. The process of developing the stories for the episodes took longer than usual because of the shift from being based on the original books to being original, and production on the first episodes of the season began in January 2013.

Future was met with critical acclaim and with the exception of the specials from previous seasons, its regular episode ratings began to rise in popularity, making it the first season (and the first four out of six specials) to have over two million viewers. The season's first 20 and last 10 episodes received high marks from critics, multiple honors, and a positive response from local viewers, including one each from the Bloxy Awards in 2014 and 2015.

A film, based on this season, titled Lovely World: To The Future was broadcasted on television on October 25, 2014.

Following the third season's debut on December 1, 2012, Avast Television revealed that a fourth season of Lovely World was actively being developed and would likely air in the fall of the following year. It was initially stated that some of the ideas that would be used for the first couple of episodes from this season would be used for the final episodes of the third season. Previously, a number of crew members who worked on the series had been discussing news ideas that could be expanded into a fourth season. Early development eventually began for the fourth season when in October 2012, John started pitching various ideas for an episode that would be a part of the then-new season; the popular "The Sheeps — The Personality" (Parts One and Two) episodes were the final iteration of that concept, with the idea of formally introducing the sheep in the two-part episode. Early in the season's creation, it was confirmed on October 1, 2012, that Cinebolt Productions and Brightmyth Film Studios would take over as the show's primary studio and producer, with Starlight serving as a co-producer.

Because of the change, the fourth season of the series was the first to be animated by the new two animation studios, with the first couple of episodes animated and produced by Starlight Productions; "The Boat — Out on Sea" was the final episode of the series that Starlight Productions would produce for the fourth season. In February 2013, it was reported that John Collins was in the process of retiring as the series' showrunner in order to focus on new creative endeavors including book writing. John commented, "You know... I wanted to work for this series as long as I want to," in response to a question regarding his resignation as showrunner. But the longer the process went, the less interested I became in the program. My interest begins to shift toward book authoring. I had been writing novels for more than thirty years, and now that I've worked on the show, I think the timing is ripe to pick up where I left off with my writing. But in the near future, I might return to the role of showrunner. I'm not sure when. I have no desire to learn. I simply want to write stories for kids because I adore them so much." When Avast Television announced new information about the fourth season in May 2013, they disclosed that Cody Campbell was in the process of becoming the show's new showrunner and would replace John.

Reuben Atkinson and David Dawson were originally responsible for the forest designs that were featured in the fourth season. As with the previous three seasons, the two collaborated with John and subsequently Cody to establish the general tone and aesthetic of the forest. Starting in January 2013, a group of more than twenty people travel to various forest parks to study trees as part of research plans for the third and soon-to-be fourth season.

Writing

This season features three distinct plotlines: the first centers on the group's ongoing efforts to build their new village and the arrival of sheep, who eventually become Edward's friends; the second revolves around their exciting new quest to find supplies for their village; and the third and final plot point centers on the group's return to the village, the introduction of new villagers, and a three-part minigame specials. Writing for the season officially started in February 2013 and originally ended in April 2014, but with the order of additional episodes, the writing process continued until it ended in June of that same year.

This season was significantly lighter in tone than the previous two, but maintaining the somber themes from the prior season. The previous season aimed for a deeper tone. This season focused more on comedy and its unique animation style. The change was first intended to go as far as the third season's development, back in 2012, when John pitched several episodes aimed at a comedic tone. But, the executives wanted to maintain the style for the entire fourth season, which was ultimately maintained in the final version.

The first few episodes picked up where the third season's last episodes left off, concentrating on the opening plot as the group formally began constructing their own community. Originally, the second storyline was supposed to be the first of the season. However, the writing team decided to introduce new characters and take a break from action episodes. As a result, the first ten episodes of the show were written between November 2012 and February 2013. John, a character who appeared in both the first and second seasons, was supposed to rejoin the group, but the plan was abandoned for undisclosed reasons. The fourth season was the first to feature original plot details, unlike the previous three, which were based on or inspired by the 2006 and 2008 books.

This was partly because Cody made changes to the show, removing references to the books and emphasizing more original concepts, and partly because John resigned as showrunner. In order to highlight an emotional element, such animal mistreatment, the writing team chose to give the Sheeps a significant role in their own episodes, "The Sheeps — The Personality — Part One" and "The Sheeps — The Personality — Part Two." In an early script of these episodes, the gang would discover they have been homeless for all this time and try to find the Sheeps from earlier; however, the premise was reworked multiple times, and in March 2013, the animal abuse element was added. When asked about the Future title means, Cody Campbell simply stated "the time yet to come".

LGBT representation

For the first time, the show addressed themes like bromance and "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender" when the writing team chose to feature Michael and Edward as a "couple" and "wanted to introduced something special that children's television show had never done" starting with this season. In the process of developing the theme, the writers aimed to provide Michael and Edward with the "most perfect story ever," but they frequently worried that they would "mess up the plot" or "ruin the entire topic." Cody Campbell formally acknowledged in a September 2014 interview that both Michael and Edward were "homosexualities" and that they had plans to elaborate on their storylines in the near future with the then-upcoming fifth season. A scene near the close of the last episode, "Michael's New Adventure — Goodbye for Now," showed Michael and Edward about to kiss, but they were interrupted by their group, so Edward tried to cover their impending kiss. Several animators proposed an alternative that showed Edward and Michael kissing for five seconds; a deleted scene featured the group's original reaction. John had originally intended for the characters to kiss in front of the screen, but his kissing would be cut and focused on their legs. John chose to show them almost kissing instead of the real thing, but at the last second, their group calls them out.

Jack Williams voiced as a old man in the episode The Final Day in the Lovely World", which was focused on the character that he voiced. It would be one of his final acting roles, before his death in May 2015.

Official voice acting for this season began in May 2013 and ended by May 2014, over a year later. Like the previous three seasons, the four main characters are voiced by Louie Brown, Enrique Harding, Davon Meyer and Daisy Hart, respectively. The following episodes featured Jimmy Jimmy as an actor: "A Lovely World Special — The Anger and Edward and Hayden's Pain and Rage!" as a villager; "The First Big Minigames — The Opening and the Rounds — Part One" and "The First Big Minigames — The Villagers's Loss, But The Fun That We Had! — Part Three" as a host for the minigames; he also appeared in the season finale. Reports during production on the season included Jimmy Jimmy as a special guest, who was confirmed to be one of the villagers for the episode "The Lovely World — A New Person." In the episode "The Rebuilding of Edward's House," Nolan B. Johnson voiced a villager. He later returned to the role in the following episodes: "The Sheeps — The Personality — Part One" and its sequel, he voiced one of the villagers who assisted in the search for the Sheeps; in the episode "The Television," he voiced a younger villager serving as one of the main hosts for the group's first television; in "The Old Enemy!", he voiced one of the army that "Z" spawned in and attempted to attack the group; and in "Aiming for the Game," he voiced one of the twenty villagers who participated in the minigames with his pet wolves.

In the episode "The Villagers," 16-year-old Liam Ainsley provided the voice of one of the girls. She had already requested to play a different girl in the episode "Learning to Cook — The Failure and Success." In the episode "The Common Colds," Kneon Baconson provided the voice of one of John's closest friends. He then reprised the same part in the episode "The Stories of Edward, Michael, Leo, and Kamila's Past." One of Jack Williams's last duties before passing away in May 2015 was providing the voice of the "dying old guy" in the episode "The Final Day in the Lovely World," which revolves on the same character. The episode was ultimately dedicated to him in later broadcasts. Ronaldo Jackson spoke his role in the episode "Michael's New Adventure — Goodbye for Now" and voiced one of the guards in the episode "A Lovely World Special — The Anger and Edward and Hayden's Pain and Rage!" As Michael's supporter in the episode "A New Adventure — Aiming for a New Goal — Part One," Ronald Bloxy Jones submitted a voicemail for a unique acting role.

Ratings

The season originally began in the United States on Children's Avast Television and in Bloxanada on Avast, respectively on November 16, 2013, and officially ended on November 1, 2014. The episode "The Calm before the Storm," which debuted on November 16, 2013, marked the formal start of the season. The episode received ratings from more than 1,340 million households overall. The ratings were significantly higher than usual for the series and showed a little uptick over the third season finale. Over 1,453 million and 1,345 million viewers watched the two-part episode "The Sheeps — The Personality," with the latter number being lower than the previous that had already shown. After the premiere of "The Robots," ratings started to rise sharply, and by the next episode—aside from the specials—the show had reached over 2,000 million households overall. "Michael's New Adventure — Goodbye for Now," the season finale, garnered over 1,700 million households, a significant drop from the previous episode that had aired a week prior, but it was still seen as a major success for the average ratings for an animated television series. The season's viewership averaged between 1,500 and 2,000 million viewers per episode overall. Two of the six specials brought in less than two million viewers, while the other four brought in over two million. Like the previous three seasons, the series always aired on Saturdays, starting at 11:00 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m.

Reviews

TV critics and local viewers liked Future's directing, writing, stories, animation style, character development, and action scenes, earning it high accolades. This season was called "one of the greatest" in the entire series by many critics, who also used it as an example of "perfect television." The season received recognition for its portrayal of Michael and Edward as an LGBT relationship, and although though it was met with criticism, many hailed it as the "ideal couple." The fandom hailed and commended the other episodes for their "anime style" and "realistic" voice acting, but the first narrative was welcomed for its respite and is sometimes referred to as "the big break". As the "beginning point for spectacular intros and soundtrack," Future's music was also hailed as the best of the entire series.
