The first season of the Lovely World animated television series Lovely World: the Original Series (known as simply Lovely World), began broadcasting both in the United States on Children's Avast Television and in Bloxanada on Avast, respectively on February 5, and ended on November 5, 2011. Produced by Starlight Productions, it is loosely based by the first and second books with the same name. The season follows the adventures of Edward, the main character, who is sent to an in-digital world and must survive while creating his own "world". The season was developed by the "Original Series" production crew, with the scripts for the episodes written by Blake Thomson, Billy Mcconnell, Keagon Robinson, Kian Richardson, Charlie Fisher, Jake Nicholson, Matthew Anderson, Graham Reynolds and Adam Perry. Upon the season's first broadcast, critics praised it as one of the best animated television shows for children and audiences; several episodes received numerous awards for animation, writing, and directing.

In this season, there are two "storylines": the first ten episodes is centered on Edward's attempts to adapt to his new world after being sucked inside from the real world, which is based on the first book and the second, inspired by the other, follows him as he lives in a village with his friend John, before traveling on a adventure to discover the new world with Michael and later, Leo. A series based on the Lovely World books was first discussed by Collins after his book The Lovely World was released previously in 2006, and he eventually began writing a story draft with tremendous success, and the series began development in December 2009. A film, based on the season and a retelling of episodes 23 to 29, titled The Start of the Lovely World was released in theaters in the United States and in some countries on November 12, 2011.

Production

Avast Television started retitling the first three seasons in 2014 while the fourth season was airing; the first season was titled Lovely World: The First Season was renamed Lovely World - the Original Series in 2016 because the corporation decided to incorporate the first five seasons into a new series called the Original Series, which would be announced after the confirmation of the Beta Series.

Background

Main article: Lovely World (2011 TV series)#Conception

The Lovely World, the twenty-sixth children's book and the first book in the Lovely World series written and published by author John Collins, tells the story of a young teenager who is sent to an in-digital world and must overcome the difficulties of being alone. Eventually, the young adolescent succeeds in overcoming these challenges and forges his own villages and friendships with the animals. A New Lovely World, John's January 2008 sequel and the second book in the series, focuses on the adolescent's battle with his own foes, whom he vanquishes with the help of his friends. Both books had great success and were well-regarded for their themes and authorial voices.

Conception and development

In an interview, John Collins, who had earlier said that he had enjoyed writing the first book, said that he often sent photos of the story and made new drawings when asked about a sequel in late 2006. Later, he said that he was concentrating more on developing a television series based on the series and hoped that it would "enter production sometime around 2008." The following year, John started drafting an early story draft for a potential television series, "hoping gonna get the series to enter development," because he had previously worked as a director and producer and was also an animator for a few other television shows, including the then-popular Hero, But Zero series.

Jocelynn Maldonado, John's co-writer for his earlier works, served as a writer for the tale draft, which he developed in collaboration with co-producer Finley Hamilton. They conducted regular narrative sessions to discuss preparations for the four weeks it needed to build the draft; John used both novels to come up with new plots. John went to Avast Television in November 2009 and formally pitched the plot draft, displaying the worldbuilding. The interview was very well received, and as a result, the series was officially put into development, however it was not given the green light. John ordered for a small production crew, in which had at least 20 animators and 10 writers and directors to be hired for the series, rather than a usual big crew, in which at first led to Avast Television to resisted the idea, but John were able to get them to ordered a small crew.

When asked why they rejected John's proposal, Avast Television stated in an interview that they didn't want the production team to "work on the show slowly" because they already had a broadcast date for early 2011 set, which had been confirmed in February 2010; additionally, because of the small size, Avast was concerned that "they were set to delay the series." CEO Donald Avast ultimately expressed his want to "give them a chance" and said, "If the production staff was doing a slow job, they have to delay the series and order additional more workers," in reference to the production crew, as John had requested.

The four main characters were first handled by John, an animator and drawer, during the season's development. John drew the characters as "strange animals that looked like people," but he designed them in a way "that would appeal to both reviewers and audiences," hoping to avoid giving the show that "uncanny look." The design would eventually be handled by artists Scott Murray, Evan Hunt, and Aidan Johnson.

Writing

During production on the first episodes, John and the team got together to talk about how the show ran and how certain narrative points may line up, so fixing and unraveling the story, in order to make the first episode's plot make sense. An early draft of the story proposed that a computer virus that Edward had been using in the real world had "a secret power that wasn't exploited until now," but this notion was dropped since it didn't make sense. Another draught of the story had Edward falling asleep and then unexpectedly being taken to the new realm, but it was also eventually discarded.
