Back in the early 1940s, Jimmy MacDonald created this sound using a drum and a bulb horn. Originally a Disney sound effect, as it debuted in a Disney animated short, Chicken Little on December 17, 1943.

The first television series to use this sound effect was Darkwing Duck on September 7, 1991, and its first movie appearance to used this sound effect was the Amblimation film, We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (1993) on November 24, 1993.

In the summer of 1992, The Hollywood Edge added this sound effect to the Cartoon Trax Volume 1 library. In 2014, The Hollywood Edge went out of business, due to bankruptcy. After that, Sound Ideas took over to acquire it, along with other The Hollywood Edge sounds.

Today, it's one of the most common Cartoon Trax/Disney bang sounds to be used in more than a thousand pieces of media.
