Quality Dang is the rap debut song by deceased Robloxian rapper and football player Tayvion Cole. Cole composed and produced the song as well; the song's funding came from many sources. It was made available online on Cole's BloxTube account on July 6, 2020, and as of February 2024, it has received over 95 million views on the platform and at least 112 million views across all social media platforms, including BloxBook, Instagram, and BloxTok.
It was re-released on BloxTok and other social media applications after Cole was murdered on the evening of August 1, 2021. Media reviewers gave the song favorable reviews, and it went on to become one of the greatest rap songs in contemporary history. Later, the song was mainly dedicated to rapper George Bloxord, who was murdered during a electrocution on August 1, 2020, in the afternoon by a police officer. It was also reportedly dedicated to Asia White.
Background and recording
Tayvion Cole wrote and produced Quality Dang
Writing the song that would become Quality Dang started in the first few days of January 2020, Tayvion Cole was 16 or about 17 years old at the time and previously, Cole had joined the Lost Rappers Club, which George Bloxord ran, about a year ago as one of its newest members. Cole had goals for the "future" in the past, which included penning a song that featured rapping among other genres. Pop music was a major influence on the song, as was the work of prior rap artists Lyonel Khalil, Jabari Harvey, Lil Dang and Lil Mist, all of whom collaborated on the track. The "dang" term was chosen because it was "used to emphasize something, especially to express anger or frustration," and the song itself was centered upon the theme of life's quality. The development of Quality Dang took around four months to finish, since Tayvion Cole had been working on different music sounds and designs at Kensington North High School while he was creating his very first song. Tayvion Cole made the decision to start a campaign in order to earn money for the song, and in March 2020, the song was initially revealed on the website.
Most of the production for Quality Dang was done at home during the COVID-19 epidemic, which caused all public venues to close and compelled people to "stay inside". In June of that year, Tayvion Cole asked his father Julius Cole if he could hire a recording studio. Although Julius first said no, he eventually agreed to Tayvion's request and chose to rent a studio close to Cole's residence. In the process of recording, Tayvion Cole "hired" a few of his online and in-person music school students that he had previously met before the epidemic to collaborate with him on the song's composition. When the song was written, Tayvion Cole had about 1,000 subscribers on his own YouTube account, the majority of whom were his classmates. Cole made the decision to record a music video, which he uploaded on June 1, 2020, announcing the song's title and the fact that it will be released in a month. Ten days were spent recording, and Cole enlisted his buddy Kendrick Hill—a "master in editing"—to help with the song's editing.
Music video
The song's accompanying music video, titled as Quality Dang: The Song was released on BloxTube on November 22, 2020. In addition to Brendan McIntosh, who was a classmate of Cole's and had worked on music class, Julius Cole, Arthur Cox, William Wilkinson, Deshawn Skinner, Hank Hoover, and Tayvion Cole produced the film. When Cole was approached to film a music video for the song after it was released in July, it was said that he declined because he didn't know how to "create any dance moves" and since the majority of the financing was still being utilized for the song itself. Nevertheless, Cole started production on a music video with more cash and encouragement from new followers. Filming for the music video started in September 2020. Cole had anticipated it to take more than ten days, but due of the low population and the fact that most students were still at home, the procedure was simple and took only four days. On November 8, 2020, a teaser for the music video was first posted on the YouTube channel. The song was scheduled for release on November 22, which was two weeks away. Quality Dang: The Music Video was the name of the music video that was first made public on November 20, 2020. However, the song was retitled Quality Dang: The Song with the release of the music video, for reasons that are now unclear. With more than 72 million views, it is the second most popular video on Cole's BloxTube account, after a recording of the song.
Release
Quality Dang debuted in The United States Of Robloxia on July 6, 2020 on BloxTube. When the song started playing, there were about 200 people seeing the video, which was a premiere feature on the app. There are supposedly 219 viewers left when the video closes. The song was provided for digital download on July 13, one week after it was released, and for iTunes the following week.
Critical reception
Quality Dang was met with positive reviews from media critics, with praise for its "catchy" tones and "fun" energy, especially for a teenager's first music song. Ryan Armstrong gave the song a 7 out of 10, complimented it, said it was a "shock" that Cole was only about 17 years old while "way older artists" started their careers, cited Cole's ascent to fame as an example of "good work," and concluded by wishing Cole "had a good career." Giving the song a grade of four stars out of five, Saniya Crawford lauded it, calling it one of the "much more better rap song" in contemporary rapping.
Legacy
Due to its popularity and notoriety, Quality Dang rose to prominence in 2020. Additionally, the COVID-19 epidemic coincided with the growth of social media, particularly Bloxtok. The song had almost 113 million views across all social media platforms in January 2021. During a song interview in February 2021, Tayvion Cole revealed that the song and its music video was dedicated to his "friend" George Bloxord, who was shot by a police officer on August 1, 2020 in the afternoon. He claimed, "George was the main reason that I created this song." It's not for me, this song is for him. Essentially, this song is dedicated to his life, his friends, and all those who helped him along the way while he was on this planet. Now that I've become one of the greatest rappers in Robloxia, I bet he is proud of me." When Cole said that George Bloxord heard the song for the first time, he reportedly responded, "You did really good my boy." You truly did. August 7, 2021, saw the 17-year-old Tayvion Cole being killed at a neighborhood party. In the wake of his passing, the song gained exponential traction, garnering more views than it had between January and July of the same year
