Erik Cassel I (December 22, 1272 – July 31, 1311) was the first president of the Robloxian Empire, which is now the United States of Robloxia, from 1296 to his death in 1311. Cassel was also recognised as the one of the explorers who 'discovered' North Bloxmerica at a young age alongside Maximus Mormutball Sr. and Henry I from Ro-Britain, six years before gaining presidency.

Erik Cassel I is presumed to be born on December 22, 1272 into a well-known family, the Cassel Family, to Mason Harrison Cassel and Yasmin Chambers who were both notable people among their town in Arbington. Cassel had faced a challenging childhood mainly due to his stepmother and frequent illness who was welcomed to the family after Chambers’s death after giving birth to Cassel. Cassel, during his teenage years, was heavily inspired to explore new places following an experience, that further led him to frequently sail overseas by the age of 17. At that age, Cassel had already discovered a few small islands in order to help Ro Britian colonise. During that time, Cassel had gained a positive reputation and respect due to his friendly contact with indigenous communities and strengthening positive relationships with them. Cassel, alongside Maximus Mormutball Sr. and Henry I discovered the land now known as Robloxia in 1291 and was later elected as the country’s first president.

Early life

Birth and childhood

The year Erik Cassel I was born varies, with some historians placing him between 1265 and 1275. However, the year 1272 is widely accepted as the exact birth year, with the date of December 22 used as his birth date. Erik Cassel I was born into a well-known family known as the Cassel Family in which his mother, Yasmin Chambers, was a farmer alongside his father, Mason Harrison Cassel, who was a wealthy merchant. Although his exact birth place is unknown, he is believed to be born in what is now Arbington, a town in Bloxland, and, according to some accounts, had a difficult childhood. Mason was believed to be in a meeting with several people when Erik was born, until one unnamed maid rushed up to him and informed him that Yasmin had given birth. According to a written paper discovered in the 1900s, Yasmin experienced several pains shortly after and died before Mason could reach her, leaving Mason devastated. Mason later married Emmaline Carpenter. Erik was forced to work on farms with Emmaline when he was between two and four years old, and when Erik refused to listen, Emmaline was accused of abusing him, according to one source, while another claimed that she dismissed Erik and did not see him as a member of the family.

Erik was trained to ride a horse, which the family nicknamed as the "Big One", at the age of five, according to a source from a history book titled The Story of Erik Cassel I: The Origin, and in one incident, Erik fell off and badly injured his head, which he was treated for and eventually healed, but left him with a fear of riding horses. Similar narration appears in John Markin's book Erik Cassel I. Emmaline was disgusted by this and forced Erik to do it while Mason tried to persuade her to stop, but she refused. By the age of ten, she had promoted Erik to work with him at a small theatre, where Mason privately trained him to dance in public appearances and ceremonies, as well as shoot bows and attack with knives, among other things, in preparation for a war when he was eighteen. It is widely assumed that when Erik was seventeen years old, he began to become ill, vomiting twice a day and coughing "to the point where he was having trouble breathing". Erik's illness lasted nearly a month, and in between days, he collapsed to the floor and nearly died, according to two sources, but was "saved by God".

Teenage years

By Cassel’s teenage years, his health gradually began to improve as he focused on better diets and lifestyle. When Cassel was thirteen, his interest on exploring was sparked after his father once told him to wander around the nearby patch of trees while he was busy. Initially, Cassel was sitting on a log between a bunch of trees. However, due to boredom, Cassel made the decision to go further although he felt that his father would not allow him. During his short exploration, Cassel had also began admiring nature, most notably after finding a vast pond nearly a kilometre away from their house. Cassel once wrote in a small biography, that he was “extremely surprised for never knowing such a beautiful landscape ever existed” near his house. He sat on a log next to the pond for several minutes and subsequently resumed exploring the area. However, more than an hour passed by as Cassel roamed around, leading to his father becoming worried as the sun began to set. Eventually, Cassel returned to his house, as stated in The Story of Erik Cassel I: The Origins, “despite Mason being a loving father, his father’s worries would lead him to him scolding Cassel for nearly half an hour, and also punishing him by making him sleep on the floor.” However, this did not stop his passion for exploring.

Adult life

Exploration

Erik Cassel I’s passion for exploration was a defining feature of his early life and played a crucial role in shaping the future of the Robloxian continent. By the age of 17, Cassel had already began sailing ships with other explorers. Around early 1290, Cassel went on an exploration alongside Maximus Mormutball Sr. and Henry I. He had went on a historic expedition in 1290, commissioned by the Ro British monarchy and several influential trading guilds. Erik Cassel and the explorers who he was with on the expedition, wanted to chart unknown territories beyond Ro Britain, with the king, George I having the desire to expand territorial claims and establishing new trade routes. However, during the expedition, several challenges including violent storms and scarce provisions hindered them. Eventually, they landed on a coastal region later named Saylorville. During the later months, Cassel conducted a few surveys of the land, its natural resources, and its indigenous peoples, drawing detailed maps and journals that would help in future expeditions.

A few months after the initial landing at Saylorville, Erik Cassel I and his expedition party undertook a series of explorations that revealed the diverse and unpredictable nature of the new continent. In one notable event, the explorers encountered a previously undocumented species of large, flightless bird, which the crew nicknamed the “Bloxwing,” because of its “odd looking” feathers and behavior that was difficult to predict. This discovery, although regarded as “minor”, fascinated many naturalists in mainland Ro Britain. The new bird has also contributed to several folklore. Cassel’s group later held the first recorded peaceful exchange with a native tribe on an island located upon Bloxington Ocean, sharing gifts and knowledge that established a friendly relationship. The explorers also documented several natural landmarks, such as the Crystal Cascades and the Calmdance Hills. These observations did have a positive impact on the mapping and understanding of the location’s geography and ecology.

Cassel has also participated in other smaller exploratory parties the same year. He often aimed to establish contact with indigenous communities and find for unique bird species as Cassel often admired nature since a young age. During a journey overseas, Cassel discovered a small island, Silvergrove Forest. In the island, Cassel mapped many areas mainly close to the shore as there were dense forests, especially a vast wetland with hidden sinkholes. Interactions with the Mountainclaw tribe in the island resulted in a cultural exchange on traditional hunting techniques and seasonal migration patterns. Cassel alongside with his explorer group also charted several inland waterways, including the Azure River, which would later become a crucial trade route.

Founding of Robloxia

Erik Cassel I's journey to North Bloxmerica began in late 1290, when he, along with Maximus Mormutball Sr. and Henry I, set sail from Ro Britain under a royal charter issued by the king. Their exploration was also a part of a plan further expanding Ro Britain's global reach. Cassel captained the Ro Britianrus, one of three ships in the fleet. The ships sailed for several months although they faced a few storms, internal disputes and hostile weather conditions. On March 22, 1291, the expedition landed on the eastern shore of what would later be known as the Robloxian continent, or North Bloxmerica. The crew named the site Redwick Bay, after a region back home. Although the terrain seemed unfamiliar to Cassel and the other explorers, he noted in his personal journals the wide availability of timber, wildlife, and rivers. He was one of the first to step ashore and raise the Ro British banner, symbolically claiming the land for the crown.

During the following weeks, Cassel took the lead in organizing a makeshift settlement, directing the construction of wooden huts and a central watchtower overlooking the bay. Cassel had also been appreciated due to him being able to control early food shortages and harsh weather during his leadership in the early settlements. Instead of approaching the indigenous Robloxian tribes with hostility, Cassel initially communicated cautiously avoiding any harm. A translator who was aboard one of the ship helped initial exchanges to happen that were made with a local group known as the Ka'uta, who resided along the a vast lake. Cassel traded goods such as fabric, iron tools, and beads in exchange for fish, maize, and regional knowledge. The relationship allowed the settlers to expand their settlements inland without immediate conflict. Cassel also commissioned scouts to survey nearby lands and water routes that later became trade paths and roads.

Presidency

Erik Cassel became the first President of Robloxia in 1307, shortly after the Founders' Pact was signed. The pact brought together several colonies along the coast under a single colonial government. Although the colonies were still part of the Ro British at the time, Cassel had strong local control and helped shape many of the early systems of government. His administration created a council of settlers, a simple court system, and a land grant program to help expand settlements inland. Cassel also worked to keep peace between the Ro British, Rogaulians, and other settlers, and encouraged unity between the early communities. As President, Cassel focused on building good relations with native tribes. He made agreements with several groups, including the Ka'uta, Miraki, and Noddowan peoples. In early 1310, he launched a major mapping expedition to explore the land and record information about native languages and trade routes. One of the most serious challenges during his presidency was the Greyta Dispute in 1310, when a trade conflict with the Miraki nearly led to war. Cassel personally traveled to the region and helped end the conflict peacefully. He was known for his calm leadership and efforts to avoid violence. Cassel's presidency also included major infrastructure projects. He helped found towns like Fort Callemore, South Portwell, and New Sayersfield, and oversaw the construction of the Great North Trail, which connected the east coast to the inland areas. He also set up a new tax system to pay for these projects. One of the most important projects of his term was the building of the Redwick Beacon, a lighthouse that helped ships arrive safely in Robloxia.

Cassel, during his later years in office faced rising tensions between Robloxia and foreign powers, most notably during the early stages of the Triumvirate War. Although Cassel was not alive during its conclusion, Cassel presided over the Empire during its initial involvement in the conflict. In 1304, Robloxia annexed Bloxas after the region declared independence from Ro-Spain and immediately came under threat by both the Ro-Spanish and Rogaulian Empires. Cassel approved emergency mobilization, issuing recruitment orders and authorizing defensive positions across southern Robloxia. Cassel managed to win wars like the Battle of Redridge Pass in 1305, a major mountain defense that protected access to the Gulf. Cassel also helped coordinate early diplomatic strategies, preparing the groundwork for what would eventually become the Robloxian–Rogaulian alliance. Despite the growing crisis, Cassel remained focused on improving internal trade, approving provisions for army supply lines and directing fortification efforts in frontier towns.

Death

Erik Cassel’s death in 1311 came just months after Robloxia's capture of Fort Blokeworth, a major Spanish stronghold. He had died due to cancer at the age of 38. Based on official records, his health had been declining throughout the early 1310s, though many details were kept confidential by those close to him. Several personal letters written by Cassel in his final year indicated he had been experiencing serious fatigue and internal pain but continued to perform presidential duties until his condition worsened in mid-1311. He passed away peacefully in his private residence in South Portwell, surrounded by close family members and advisors.

His death caused nationwide mourning. Across the Robloxian Empire many flags were flown at half-mast for seven days, and a state funeral was held in Redwick Bay, where thousands of citizens gathered to pay their respects. His coffin was later transported along the newly constructed Great North Trail and buried in a memorial tomb at the foot of the Karkoss Hills, a site he had once explored in his younger years. Many viewed his death as a new era for the Robloxian Empire.

Legacy

Erik Cassel I is widely regarded as the founding father of the United States of Robloxia and one of the most influential figures in its early history. Many believe that his leadership and strategies to control the nation led to the success of the country which exists now. Cassel’s presidency is often credited with establishing many of the Empire’s earliest systems of governance, infrastructure, diplomacy, and military organization.

There are many monuments and landmarks that honor Erik Cassel throughout Robloxia while there are also several places named after him. These include the Erik Cassel National Memorial in Bloxburg, a statue in his birth place, Arbington, and the Erik Cassel Museum in Bloxhicago, which has many of his personal belongings, journals, and early maps. Several schools, roads, and government buildings are also named after him. His story is frequently taught in Robloxian schools, especially during lessons about exploration, independence, and early nation-building. Many historians consider his presidency as the “symbolic start of Robloxia’s rise as a continental power.”
