  • First heard: "Bozo and the Birds" (a Bozo the Clown Capitol Record-Reader.)
  • Area served: Worldwide

First recorded in the 1940s, this sound effect was made from a Jew's harp.

It was mainly used when someone or an object bounces around, like a ball, generally for comedic effect, but can, oddly enough, be used as a hit sound as well. It was originally a Capitol Records sound effect.

Its earliest known usage is in "Bozo and the Birds", a Bozo the Clown kiddie record from the 1940s, and later would find its way into the TV Spots library, first used in the Popeye cartoon "When There's a Will" in 1960. It would later find its way into Hanna-Barbera's sound library. Its earliest usage by them was The Ruff and Reddy Show episode "Rumble in the Jungle", first broadcast on December 27, 1958. It would be used in some of their cartoons (like The Flintstones, The Jetsons, The Huckleberry Hound Show, Wacky Races and The New Scooby-Doo Movies.), before the sound made its way to other studios like Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios. It is often used in modern media today and the most popular boing sound effect, especially in shows like The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, Arthur, Dragon Tales, Blue's Clues and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

The original version of this sound was later edited for inclusion in Sound Ideas, COMEDY - MONTAGE OF VARIOUS COMEDY EFFECTS 01. A looped version of this sound effect can be found on Classic TV Sound Effects Library, called COMEDY, BOUNCE - CONTINUOUS SPRINGING BOUNCE. There are also a high pitched version of this sound called HOYT'S LITTLE BOING and a very high pitched one called LITTLE BOING, which cannot be found on the Hanna-Barbera Sound Effects Library (they can only be achieved through pitch editing in software).

(The original version of this sound, mixed with a choke/poof sound not to be confused with Sound Ideas, POOZ, CARTOON - PAUL'S POOZ 02.) (A slightly edited version - likely edited by Fizz Sound Creation for anime and even for some cartoons in the 1980s.)
