This sound was created by Jimmy MacDonald in February 1941 at Walt Disney Productions for Burbank, California, using a slide whistle and a bicycle horn. Originally a Disney effect, it debuted in the Mickey Mouse short, A Gentleman's Gentleman on March 28, 1941. It first TV shows appeared in Sesame Street, and movies appeared in the Disney animated musical film, Aladdin, on November 25, 1992.

Then in the summer of 1992, The Hollywood Edge added this sound to the Cartoon Trax Volume 1 library. Sound Ideas took over to acquire this sound after the bankruptcy of The Hollywood Edge.

Today, it is commonly heard in many pieces of media, along with other cartoon sounds from the library. This sound is also heavily used as Dipsy's bottom sound in Teletubbies.
