The Telamon Islands Golden Cup (Telamonian: Ke Kiaha Gula o Na Mokupuni Telamona) is an annual cup organized by the Telamon Islands Football Association. The first edition took place in 1946 under the name of the Reconstruction Cup (Telamonian: Kiaha Kukulu Hou). It is the oldest national football competition in Telamon Islands history.
History
The Telamon Islands Golden Cup was founded in 1946 when the Telamon Islands Football Association decided to organize the Reconstruction Cup as a friendly competition, with proceeds going to support the country's post-war reconstruction. The winner of the cup was declared the Telamon Islands football champion. The idea proved successful, and the cup became very popular. The last Reconstruction Cup was held in 1952. Subsequent cups did not bear this name, and the proceeds were no longer used for the reconstruction of the country, but rather for supporting the development of the sport in the country. In 1953, the cup was renamed the Telamon Cup. A year later, the X-Liga was established and separated from the cup. The cup itself then changed its name to its current one. Over the following years, the cup became a tradition and enjoyed great popularity. The number of teams steadily increased, encompassing more and more of the emerging tiers of football in the country. Today, the cup remains very popular and, alongside the league, is important in determining the best team in the country. In the country's history, eighty cups have been played, won by thirty-one teams. Ten times, the cup winner also won the league, completing the double. Twice, the cup winner won the treble.
Stadiums
In most rounds, matches are held at the competitors' stadiums. The final has to be held at the Mauna Kola Arena, or if the stadium is unavailable, at one of the other major stadiums in the country.
Format
The first half of the season features preliminary rounds for the tournament, involving thousands of lower-tier teams from across the country. These preliminary rounds take the form of regional cups for smaller teams, with the winners advancing to successive rounds until they qualify for the main tournament. The main tournament features 152 teams, including 18 teams qualified through play-offs and the regional cups.
