Brookhaven Fire Whirl outbreak of January 22nd-February 11th, 2002

The Brookhaven Fire Whirl outbreak of January 22nd-February 11th, 2002 was a prolific and deadly fire whirl outbreak that ravaged the Brookhaven County. Lasting 20 days, the outbreak produced 860 fire whirls. The most significant fire whirls were the 180 EF4 fire whirls. The tornado outbreak killed 1,980 Robloxians and injured at least 50,000 Robloxians. It took 200 fire fighters to put out all the fires caused by the fire whirls afterward.

Meteorological Synopsis

An unexpected outbreak of strong fire whirls occurred throughout The Brookhaven County on January 22nd, 2002. On December 12, 2001, an enhanced risk was issued for the region, stating that tornadoes were possible. This was changed to only a marginal risk January 2, 2002, as a strong CIN was expected to limit any severe storms from developing. Strong shear, extreme instability, and powerful low level winds were still expected however, and the risk was upgraded again to a slight risk later. A severe increase of temperatures then followed, with storms developing in Southern Brookhaven County later, and began moving ENE. These storms locked just to the southeast of a strong low pressure system, and remained in the warm sector for their entire lifespans. Due to the extreme instability, the storm updrafts were very intense and pushed the cloud tops very high. Colossal hail up to the size of 20 softballs was reported with multicellular clusters. This storm continued through the morning hours of the outbreak's dawn, but still producing colossal hail with 100 damaging gusts. Around 7:00 AM Valley Time, Trained spotters reported that the storms have 40 organized rotating updrafts. About an hour later, the 40 updrafts split into 40 strong cyclic supercell thunderstorms. The first 40 fire whirl warnings were issued on the First Cell, which was confirmed, only a little bit after the storm crossed the Brookhaven County border. This storm had already produced 40 fire whirls, with no warnings being issued. Even though the capping inversion strengthened and prohibited storm development, the 40 already formed supercells continued throughout the next 19 days. These storms became very tornado-like, each cycling through at least 100 different mesocyclones and producing 860 fire whirls across Brookhaven County. Astonishingly, 640 of these fire whirls were significant, including 180 rated EF4. Hard hit areas included the county seat of Brookhaven.
