Willsham, formerly Wills’ Ham, is a town located in northern South Bloxifornia, a state in the United States of Robloxia. It is located in the southern plains of Brickington County. The town has a population of 30,304 as of the 2020 census and it is situated about 26 miles southeast from Brickington, the county seat, and is part of the Greater Brickington metropolitan area. Willsham was known to be originally founded as a mining settlement in the late 1800s. However, it eventually experienced significant growth during the industrial rise of the early 20th century, eventually developing into a working-class town with residential neighborhoods, small businesses, and older industrial facilities. Although Willsham has numerous of tourist attractions such as the historic Willsham Courthouse, Brickline Park and the Willsham Arts Market, Willsham is known to have high crime rates, particularly after sunset. Hence, residents and visitors are often advised to avoid walking alone late at night. The town frequently suffers from gang violence which is at times considered "common to witness at least two times an year" according to residents. Its escalating crime rates led to the town having a position in the Top 150 Dangerous Places of the U.S.
In recent years, Willsham’s local government has introduced a number of initiatives aimed at addressing its growing safety concerns and improving everyday life for residents like the expansion of street lighting in poorly lit neighborhoods, the installation of additional security cameras in commercial zones, and a slight increase in police patrols during evening hours. The Willsham Town Council also made partnerships with several nonprofit organizations to launch youth engagement programs, especially in schools and recreation centers in order to decrease gang involvement in the future. Despite this, progress is quite slower than expected and streets after 11 PM would remain "dead".
Other than crimes, Willsham remains a popular place to explore its local culture. Willsham is known for its public high school, Willsham Central High, which was built in 1954, having a "skilled" football team, the Willsham Hawks. The town also has a small public library located near Brickline Park, and a weekly farmers' market which is held every Saturday morning in the town square. Willsham Bell Tower, which is one of the oldest structures in the town, located in the outskirts, was built in 1892, which still rings every hour. A highway, State Route 19, runs straight through the middle of the town, with a flyover, and connects it to Brickington in under 50 minutes by car. Willsham also has a small train station, named the Willsham Train Station, however trains only arrive twice a day.
Etymology
According to local historians, the name Willsham is believed to have originated from the surname of an early settler or landowner, possibly someone named William or Wills, combined with the old English suffix “-ham”, meaning “home” or “village.” A handful of local folklore also suggest that a man named Thomas Wills operated a small trading post near the area’s original mining camp in the 1870s, which may have influenced the name. Early maps from the 1880s show the area labeled as “Wills’ Ham,” which later became shortened and stylized into “Willsham” by the early 20th century. While the exact origin is uncertain, most historians agree that the name reflects both personal influence and traditional naming conventions found throughout South Bloxifornia.
History
Early years (1871–1899)
Willsham’s recorded history began in 1871, when prospectors from the southern pars of South Bloxifornia discovered silver and iron ore in the hills near what is now the town’s outskirts. The discovery led to the creation of small-scale mines that attracted many traders and blacksmiths to the region. However, during that time, the area was mostly unsettled, covered in dry plains and had a few low populated tribes that had lived there for centuries or have migrated a few hundred years prior to that. A few years later, settlers began to further make more makeshift tents and wooden around mining sites and the area was later on called, “Wills Camp.” By 1873, mining companies from nearby Brickington began investing in the region, constructing several mine shafts and hiring large numbers of workers who were looking for better opportunities. In August 1875, the Brickland and Southern Rail Line was built to connect towns around Brickington County.
Throughout the 1880s and 1890s, Willsham into a more permanent settlement instead of a mining camp, with simple wooden roads, saloons, boarding houses, and general stores. In 1882, the town established its first schoolhouse, followed by the construction of the Willsham Courthouse in 1888, which remains one of the town’s most historic landmarks today. By the end of the 19th century, the population reached just over 3,000 with the majority of residents working in ore mining, smelting, or related trades. Although mining profits began to decline by the late 1890s due to exhausted veins and stricter safety laws, Willsham’s economy later on adapted by turning toward small manufacturing industries, particularly tool production. During this time, crime was already becoming a major issue, especially with rising tensions between labor groups and mine owners. Many notable disputes occured within 1895 and 1899, including the Willsham Miners’ Strike of 1897, which ended in a standoff between workers and the county constables.
Growth (1900–1930)
During the early 20th century, Willsham experienced continued growth as it transitioned from a declining mining outpost into a small industrial town. By 1902, most silver and iron mines were closed with many businesses moving to manufacturing and railroad-related businesses. In 1904, a new railroad was made near East Willsham, turning the location into a small logistics hub as it allowed freight and agricultural goods from southern Brickington County to pass through. Willsham Brickworks, founded in 1906, became one of the town’s largest employers, producing bricks and construction materials for nearby cities like Brickington and West Cota. During the late 1908, the mayor at that time, Harold E. White, passed the Willsham Development Act of 1908, leading to schools, and commercial buildings replacing older wooden structures. Around this time, the town center began to develop.
During the mid 1910s, Roblox War I helped improve Willsham's economy due to the town's war effort, producing steel tools, munitions casings, and train parts. Many young men from Willsham enlisted in the Robloxian Army, and their names were later engraved on a stone memorial erected outside the Willsham Courthouse in 1920. After the war, however, the town faced new challenges. The postwar recession hit Willsham’s industrial sector significantly, causing several businesses to downsize or shut down entirely. Prohibition, introduced in the 1920s, led to a rise in underground alcohol trade, and Willsham saw an increase in bootlegging activity and illegal speakeasies, particularly along what is now Dewley Avenue. The Willsham Police Department, officially formed in 1922, struggled to enforce order during this time.
Great Depression and Roblox War II (1930–1945)
During the early 1930s, the Great Depression significantly affected Willsham leading to unemployment among people as factories closed or slowed down. Some families moved to other towns, while others stayed and tried to live with small jobs or farming. Following these events, the local government was “devastated” and decided to give out food and supplies to poorer families in the town, and a few soup kitchens were opened. The Great Depression also triggered crime with more frequent thefts and vandalism. In 1933, a large-scale fire in the western part of town that destroyed several shops and houses in Whirlwind Neighborhood, and due to the fire department being quite small, it took several hours to stop the flame, and this led to widespread devastation throughout the town. Unexpectedly, no fatalities were caused with only nine injuries throughout the neighborhood as residents evacuated on time. In the late 1930s, the town experienced more improvements as the government built new roads and schools as part of work programs. The Willsham Hospital opened in 1937, in response to local diseases and high demands. When Roblox War II started in 1939, many men from Willsham signed up to join the army, although some did not survive, leading to a memorial being built in the outskirts. Due to the war, several local factories were opened by the government and were used to make army supplies, such as uniforms and metal parts.
Development Era (1946–1970)
After Roblox War II ended in 1945, numerous of soldiers from Willsham returned home, and the town began to further develop. The late 1940s brought a small economic boom. Some factories that had once made military supplies were converted to make cars, tools, and home goods. In 1948, the local government built a new neighborhood, called Willsham Heights, to accommodate the returning veterans and their families. This was the town’s first major housing development and included about 150 identical houses with small yards with many families from nearby rural areas started moving to Willsham looking for work, and by 1950, the town’s population had passed 20,000.
During the 1950s, Willsham continued to grow quickly. In 1953, the first shopping plaza opened near the town center with a diner, grocery store, barbershop, and pharmacy. Three years later, a public high school, Willsham Union High, was also built. However, it replaced the old schoolhouse. While many people were optimistic about the development, there were also certain problems that spread throughout the town. Many of the new neighborhoods were racially segregated, and some areas were neglected. Some factory jobs which were initially well paying began cutting wages and moving to cheaper areas during the late 1950s, which included a small steel plant, laying off 200 workers. This caused crime to rise again, especially around the older east side, prompting the police force to expand in 1961, however tensions grew.
In the 1960s, Willsham became known for both its “lively” youth culture and growing unrest. A small music scene formed downtown, with local rock bands playing in garages and old warehouses around this time. In 1964, the Willsham River Festival began and brought visitors from nearby villages. However, a few years later the festival stopped due to conflicts and property damage, mostly by gangs. Racial tensions escalated in 1966 after an incident involving police and Black residents in East Willsham sparked two days of protests. A community center was opened the next year to improve outreach and support, but divisions remained. By the end of the decade, Willsham had gained a reputation across South Bloxifornia for being “rough around the edges.”
Late 20th century (1971–1999)
In 1971, a major highway, State Route 27, was completed just west of the town, connecting Willsham more easily to Brickington and towards the border within South Bloxifornia and North Bloxifornia. This brought more traffic and a handful of new businesses, such as fast food chains and gas stations, also making it easier for people to leave for work to more distant places and to shop. However, a few family-led stores were shut down in the town center during the mid-1970s. At the same time, crime remained at a moderate-high rate with a few gangs like the Willsham Drips becoming more organized, especially in the eastern and southern parts of town. Graffiti became a common sight, and police patrols were increased again in 1975.
In 1978, a fire broke out in the old textile mill near Brickline Creek burning for nearly two days and was suspected to be arson, however the case was never solved. The fire led to the eventual abandonment of the mill and it became a place for trespassers and youth hangouts in the ‘80s. During the early 1980s, Willsham went through a rough economic patch. A small recession hit South Bloxifornia, and many local factories laid off workers or closed. The unemployment rate rose above 12% in 1983, which led poverty to increase, especially in lower-income neighborhoods. Some areas became known for car theft and drug situations and later on in 1986, a local nonprofit called Willsham Rising was formed to help youth find jobs and stay in school hosting events, tutoring, and even started a graffiti wall project to help reduce tagging on public buildings. In 1991, the Willsham Courthouse Museum reopened after renovations, and a few art studios and cafes became popular nearby. A mural project was launched in 1994 to beautify parts of the town, especially on older buildings. However, violent crime also saw a spike in the mid-90s. A series of gang-related incidents in 1996, including a shooting at Brickline Park, led to increased state police presence. Schools started installing metal detectors, and curfews were enforced for minors in 1997.
Early 21st Century (2000–present)
During the first two decades of the 21st century, Willsham went through gradual changes. In the early 2000s, a small tech warehouse opened on the outskirts, creating a numerous of jobs. However, crime continued to be a major issue, especially in the southern neighborhoods, where theft and gang activity remained common. A controversial curfew law for minors was passed in 2004 after a rise in late-night incidents, and while some residents supported it, others said it unfairly targeted poorer areas. In 2008, the 2008 Willsham Tornado occured, causing damage to the western side of town, causing damage to rooftops and downing power lines, however, no fatalities were reported while at least 21 were injured. The Willsham Community Center reopened in 2011 after major renovations, offering new youth programs, sports events, and GED classes, which helped reduce crime. By 2015, Willsham’s downtown experienced the opening of major coffee shops, a bookstore, and a refurbished train depot turning into a tourist stop for the Brickington heritage rail route. In 2018, the town council passed a plan to install more streetlights and launch the “Safe Willsham” neighborhood patrol program, which saw mixed success. The COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020 significantly impacted the town with many small businesses closing and the local hospital being overwhelmed. The pandemic also led to unemployment, although employment later on gradually increased after the pandemic subsided.
Government and politics
Willsham is governed by a mayor-council system with the mayor being elected every four years by the residents of the town. The town council has seven members, each representing a district of Willsham. The council meets every two weeks at Willsham Town Hall, located on East Main Street. Willsham has a local police department and a small courthouse that handles minor cases with more major legal matters being sent to the county seat in Brickington. The town also has a zoning commission, a housing board, and a public works committee that oversee development and infrastructure.
Politics in Willsham tend to lean center-left, with most voters supporting the Robloxian Reform Party in recent elections. However, some neighborhoods in the southern and western parts of town have shown support for Conservative candidates and based on recent reports, the town is slowly moving back to the right like how it was in the 1970s, which is evident by the 2024 Willsham mayoral election where Conservative Bill Harrison won. In the election, Conservatives won for the first time in the 21st century.
Crime
Aftermath of the 2018 Willsham Shooting and Police Chase
Crime has been a major issue since the early to mid 20th century in Willsham and remains one of the most talked-about topics among residents and officials. The town has consistently reported higher-than-average crime rates compared to nearby towns in Brickington County. While daytime hours are generally considered safe in most areas, crimes tend to increase significantly after sunset, especially in the southern and eastern neighborhoods of the town. Most crimes in Willsham have gangs involved with local gangs such as the Willsham Drips, East Wills Syndicate, and Southline Eight being active since the 1970s, with times of increased violence in the 1980s and 1990s. Gang-related incidents include robbery, vandalism, car theft, and in more severe cases, assaults and shootings. A notable event occurred in 1996 at Brickline Park, where a gang conflict led to a public shooting and prompted the town to enforce youth curfews and introduce metal detectors in schools. Another major event was in the 2018 Willsham Shooting and Police Chase where dozens of gang members, police officers and civilians died, which the police chase took place through multiple streets and had also taken place at the town.
Petty theft, break-ins, and drug activity are also common in some neighborhoods. Convenience stores and small businesses have reported frequent shoplifting and burglaries, particularly during late-night hours. The police department often increases patrols during weekends and holidays, but limited resources and staffing shortages have made consistent coverage difficult. In response to public concern, the town introduced several safety initiatives in the 2010s, including the "Safe Willsham" program, which encouraged neighborhood patrols, community reporting, and installation of streetlights and CCTV cameras. Some areas have shown improvement, however some other places continue to face challenges. In 2022, Willsham was ranked 124th in the "Top 150 Dangerous Places of the U.S." list, based on crime data and resident reports. Despite ongoing efforts, crime remains a complex issue tied to deeper problems like poverty, housing instability, and lack of opportunities for youth.
