Greater Rockford City is a city which is the capital of the semi-recognised nation, Greater Rockford. It has a population of 871,412 as of the 2020 census. Located in the state of East Rockford, the city is widely known for its tourism, commercial zones, suburban zones and a large-sized airport, Greater Rockford Airport.
The city is also home to historical structures which are mainly located at the Old Core District where there are pre-independence government buildings and narrow commercial streets which were built in the early 20th century. At the central part of the city, there is a district called the Rockford Financial Belt, which has many small corporate headquarters and trading exchanges, while the district was established in 2008. Most suburban areas are structured making it a popular place to visit. The city was formally established in 1961, more than a decade before the country’s independence.
History
A small coastal settlement was established in the area in the early 1880s, by traders who were moving goods throughout the area. By the 1900s, thousands of settlers had already moved in prompting the construction of railways and roads in the 1910s. The settlement in the area was called Rock City and was known to be a significant settlement in the area. However, in May 1961, it was formally established as “Greater Rockford City” following major geographical, political and social changes. In September 1979, it was designated as the capital of Greater Rockford, as it was the largest city. In 1981, Greater Rockford Airport was established next to the city. During the 2000s, the city underwent major economic development such as the establishment of the Rockford Financial Belt in February 2008.
Governance
As the capital, Greater Rockford City houses the central administrative council of Greater Rockford. The mayor is currently Martin Rockford who was elected in 2024 and oversees municipal governance, while national authorities operate within designated government sectors. The city is divided into multiple administrative zones, each managed by district councils responsible for local planning and services.
