The Nest (codename as The Hive) was an underground laboratory located under Fox City connected to a mansion owned by a couple. It was constructed by the Umbrella Corporation for bioweapons research, and its existence was kept secret from the majority of its employees. To lower the chance of information leaks, the facility was capable of housing more than 500 employees - researchers, doctors, specialists, technicians and support staff.
The facility was damaged when the city was irradicated in late 2002 but remained intact, since 2012, many Umbrella employees and the Umbrella High Command had secretly entered through several entrances. However, in 2034 (36 years after the initial incident) after the city was rebuilt by a fur-politician, it was sieged and later destroyed by an unnamed agency after remnants of the E-Virus' research and specimens was found.
History
The facility was constructed some time before 2002 by the Umbrella Corporation. Holding great influence over the day-to-day running of Fox City, they were able to keep its construction a secret.
2002 viral outbreak
By mid-2002, an underground anti-Umbrella group had successfully planted a mole within the laboratory. The mole, Laura Patterson, gained an ally in the laboratory's head of researcher, Samuel Tage, and the two planned to steal confidential documents and the facility's E-virus samples and use them as irrefutable proof of illegal bioweapons research. Another team of disloyal Umbrella employee, Alex and Simon Edwin, became aware of the plan and chose to steal it early and hand it to Tage and Tan Industries before Laura can has a chance. To prevent the theft from being discovered, Alex (who stole the samples) threw one of the samples to the floor, causing an uncontrollable outbreak in the Nest. Alex successfully escaped the facility before the Blue King computer system detected the leak and hand over the samples to Tage offsite. The remaining staff; including Laura, though excluding Samuel Tage and Simon Edwin, were killed by the Blue King in an effort to prevent reanimation after their exposure, knowing a team would inevitably be ordered to investigate the facility.
Later that night, Umbrella's Sanitation team entered the Foxford Mansion to investigate. There they found Petra (the head of security) and Alex, both amnesiac due to a gas released by the Blue Queen, and Garrek Patterson - Laura's brother - who had come to collect the expected sample masquerading as a police officer. Moving into the facility, the team suffered losses at the hands of a laser turret and grid used by the Blue Queen to keep away intruders. Although successfully shutting the computer down, the team suffered more losses from zombies, which the Red Queen had failed to prevent. The survivors escaped the facility's by train to the Foxford Mansion, attacked along the way by a enhanced zombie the Blue Queen had released to take out the Sanitation team earlier. Petra and Garrek were the only ones to make it back to the Foxford Mansion, where they were taken away by researchers for further study and another team sent into the Hive to re-investigate. In their attempts, the infected escaped into the city streets and caused another viral outbreak.
Secrets
As part of Doctor Alexander Jason's plan for being hidden to avoid evidence pointing them of the infection in Fox City, the reclaimed Hive became home to the Umbrella High Command and thousands of other key employees, continuing research while ensuring no one has the knowledge of Umbrella's incriminating nature.
Since 2012, many Umbrella employees and the Umbrella High Command had secretly entered through several entrances within the wasteland of Fox City. Later, in 2034, after the city was rebuilt by a fur-politician, it was sieged and later destroyed by an unnamed agency after remnants of the E-Virus' research and specimens was found.
With the destruction of the Hive and Umbrella High Command, the Umbrella Corporation was left hindered in Bioweaponary.
