The 2014 Bloxburg City emergency mayoral election was held on November 18, 2014 to elect the next mayor of Bloxburg City, following the unexpected resignation of Mayor Froggy Hopz earlier that year. The election was organized under emergency provisions outlined in Bloxburg City law, which require a new election within 90 days if a mayor vacates the office with more than a year left in their term. The special election featured two major candidates: Coeptus, a local developer and political independent, and Clyde Harrington, a city council member affiliated with the conservative Civic Action League. Coeptus eventually won the race with a clear majority, marking the beginning of his nearly political career in Bloxburg which lasted nearly a decade.
Background
On August 6, 2014, Mayor Froggy Hopz formally resigned from office, citing personal health concerns and the desire to spend time with family. His departure came as a surprise to many, especially given that he was in the middle of his third term, having last been re-elected in 2012. Hopz’s resignation triggered the city’s emergency electoral statute, requiring the Bloxburg Municipal Election Commission to call for an expedited special election.
Deputy Mayor Janice Reeve served as acting mayor in the interim but did not file to run for the full term. The candidate registration window was opened in late August and closed on September 30, 2014.
Two candidates qualified for the ballot, Coeptus and Clyde Harrington.
Results
Coeptus won the election decisively, securing 1,114,225 votes (67.7%) against Harrington’s 530,974 votes (32.3%). Voter turnout was relatively high for an off-cycle election, with over 1.6 million ballots cast. His victory was seen as a major shift in Bloxburg politics, with many analysts crediting his outsider status and strong outreach strategy.
