The 2001 Driftwood County Train Derailment was a railway accident that occurred on June 17, 2001, near South City, Driftwood County. A freight train operated by Robloxian National Railways (RNR) derailed while traveling on a curve, causing a major spill of industrial chemicals. The incident led to an emergency response, temporary evacuations, and significant environmental concerns.

Background

The train, designated RNR Freight 472, was en route from Brickington, South Bloxifornia, to Old Town Bloxifornia, North Bloxifornia. It was transporting a mix of consumer goods and hazardous materials, including chlorine gas and industrial solvents. The railway line was a frequently used route for freight transport, passing through rural and suburban areas of Driftwood County. Prior to the derailment, there had been several reports from railway workers regarding the condition of the tracks in the region. Some sections of the line were known to have aging infrastructure, but no immediate repairs had been scheduled.

Derailment

At approximately 3:42 PM local time, the train entered a curve at high speed, exceeding the 40 mph speed limit set for that section. The excessive speed caused nine of the train’s 35 cars to derail, with several overturning and spilling their contents. Among the derailed cars, three were carrying hazardous chemicals, including one containing liquid chlorine. The derailment site was located just outside South City, near a small residential area and close to the South City Lake. The chlorine leak led to immediate concerns over air and water contamination.

Emergency Response

Emergency services arrived within 30 minutes of the derailment. Firefighters, hazardous materials teams, and railway officials worked to contain the spill and assess the risks. Residents within a two-mile radius were temporarily evacuated due to concerns over chlorine exposure.

The Robloxian National Environmental Agency (RNEA) monitored air and water quality in the following days. While initial chlorine levels were concerning, they declined after cleanup operations. The spill did result in some fish deaths in the South City Lake, but no long-term environmental damage was reported.

Investigation

The Robloxian National Transportation Safety Bureau (RNTSB) launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment. The final report, released in February 2002, cited excessive speed and poor track conditions as the primary causes. Investigators found that the train was traveling at 58 mph, well above the speed limit, and that track misalignment contributed to the derailment. As a result of the findings, Robloxian National Railways committed to increased track inspections and speed enforcement on freight routes across North Bloxifornia.
