Bluecoat was the persona of a Japanese ex-saboteur during World War II. He and his son took up the mantle of the fictional costumed hero duo Bluecoat and Scout respectively.
Biography
Early life
Growing Up
The saboteur, whose real name remains undisclosed, was born into a traditional Japanese family. His upbringing instilled in him strong values of honor and loyalty. At some point, he married a Japanese woman and they had a son together.[1]
Seeking Retribution
Loss of His Wife
During World War II, his wife was interned in a camp in the United States due to the widespread internment of Japanese-Americans. The harsh conditions and treatment in the camp led to her untimely death.
The death of his wife devastated him. The personal loss fueled his desire for revenge against those he held responsible.[1]
Alliance with His Father
In their grief, he and his son were driven to seek retribution. This led him to join a group of terrorists led by his father who shared his sentiments. Together with his father, he became part of a terrorist cell that aimed to strike back at the United States.[1]
Theft of Enriched Uranium
The group managed to steal a ball of enriched uranium from Los Alamos, planning to use it as a weapon of mass destruction. Their initial plan involved causing a meltdown to maximize the impact of their revenge.[1]
Joining the Minutemen
Change of Heart
As the plan progressed, he began to realize that such an act of terrorism was not honorable and conflicted with his moral beliefs. Unable to directly approach the authorities due to his status as a wanted man, he decided to find an indirect way to warn them about the impending attack. His son suggested that they attract the attention of the Minutemen, a group of vigilantes, by adopting the personas of the titular comic book costumed adventurer duo Bluecoat and Scout.[1]
Posing as Bluecoat and Scout
Once the father and son duo donned the disguises of Bluecoat and Scout, they approached the Minutemen with their warning. The Minutemen were initially skeptical but soon realized the truth when the saboteurs publicly announced their demands and revealed their target: the Statue of Liberty.[1]
Battle at Liberty Island
The terrorists broadcast their demands on the radio, threatening to destroy the Statue of Liberty unless their conditions were met. In response, the Minutemen joined forces with Bluecoat and Scout to thwart the terrorist plot. The combined team launched an assault on Liberty Island to prevent the attack. Alongside Nite Owl and Scout, he stormed into the statue and began climbing to reach the terrorists' position. During the ascent, he was shot by a gunman and fell from the stairway, succumbing to his injuries.[1]
Legacy
Posthumous Recognition
His actions, although ultimately costing him his life, were crucial in preventing the destruction of the Statue of Liberty and saving countless lives. Though he, along with his son, died as anonymous heroes, their bravery and change of heart are remembered by those who knew the true story.[1]
