Mort & Phil is a series of Spanish animated short films created by Estudios Vara in the 1960s, an adaptation of the Mortadelo and Filemon comic strip. It consists of 23 episodes divided into 3 seasons, each of which has an approximate duration of 6 minutes.
Production
In 1965, Rafael Vara, from Madrid, hired Amaro Carretero to do animation work. Carretero suggested making a short film based on the characters of Francisco Ibáñez . Vara agreed and reached an agreement with Editorial Bruguera . Carretero then made the short film titled Mortadelo and Filemón, Information Agency (the name the comic strip had at that time). The short film won the Silver Platero Award at the Gijón Film Festival . This led to another short film being submitted to the same festival the following year, called Carioco and His Invention, which also won the award. Following the success of the two short films, Rafael Vara founded the company Dacor that same year, which would be responsible for their production until 1970. One of them, Un marciano de rondón (A Martian by Chance ), would win the award again, although it should be noted that these awards were probably obtained more due to the popularity of the characters among children (the Platero de Plata jury was made up of children) than to their quality. For economic reasons, all the short films were combined into two feature films. ]
Although the creator of the characters, Francisco Ibáñez , had no involvement in the animation's development, several jokes are taken directly from the comic strips. The titles of the shorts end in -ón to rhyme with Mortadelo and Filemón.
