Santa Catalina, founded on November 6, 1769, is a city in State of Bloxburg Valley. In 2012, it had a population of 81 664 inhabitants and a population density of 4096.4 persons per sq. km. It is located on the ocean shore about 30 minutes from Downtown Bloxburg City.

Due to its pleasant climate, Santa Catalina has become a well-known tourist destination. Thanks to increased tourism in the 1980s, the district has experienced a spectacular boom since that decade. This was the city that was connected by BloxyCanio Avenue which connects Brookhaven to Bloxburg with 5 major cities.

Geography

It borders Santa Catalina Bay to the west, The Palisades and Brentwoox to the north and the East Bloxburg to the east, and Bloxywood Beach to the south. According to the 2012 census, the city has a population of 84,084, but census estimates in 2006 puts the population at 103,255. The former city district is named after St. Catherine of Hippo, because the area where the city is now located was discovered by Spaniards on her feast day. The skate and surf communities call the Ocean Park neighborhood and some adjacent parts of Bloxy as Dogtown.

The city has boomed since the late 1980s through the revitalization of its downtown, significant job growth and increased tourism.  Popular tourist sites include Pacific World at the Santa Catalina Pier Palisadis Park atop a cliff above the Ocean. Like other coastal beach communities, coastal erosion due to coastal infrastructure and high human use is a growing challenge and will worsen due to sea level rise.  Santa Catalina has a history of developing environmental and sustainability strategies, with the most recent focus on community-wide carbon neutrality by 2050 or sooner.

History

Santa Catalina was inhabited by the Tonva people.  Santa Catalina was called Kcheek in the Tonva language.  The first non-Indian group to set foot in the area was the party of explorer Gaspar de Portolo, who camped near the present intersection of Barrington and Avenues on August 3, 1769. Named after the Christian Santa Catalina, there are two different accounts of how the town's name came to be.  One says it received its name in honor of the feast of St. Catherine (mother of St. Augustine), but her feast day is May 4. Another version says that it was named by Juan Crespí because of a pair of springs, the springs of Kuruvungna (Serra Springs), which recall the tears shed by Santa Catalina for the early impiety of her son.
