The Port Sebelsti Metro (Ro-Portuguese: Metrô do Porto-Sebelsti, Sebelstian: Metrósá Tavalimà-Sebelsti) is a rapid transit system serving the city of Port Sebelsti, the master-planned legislative and executive capital of Sebelsti. It consists of one line, the Line 2 train which runs from Baia Sul (where it connects to the Nakoof Metro) to Port Sebelsti International Airport. It is one of two metro systems located in the Federal Capital District, and is operated by SebelMet S.A , a consortium of Potato Transit Authority Global Operations , Lexington Holdings, and Waterline.
The metro opened on April 8, 2016, after a three year construction period, becoming the third metro system in the country. Fares are integrated with the Nakoof Metro and bus system as well as the Port Sebelsti bus system.
Background
Planning
In the original plan for Port Sebelsti, a light rail line was planned, but, it was considered too expensive , and due to the 2003 economic crisis in Sebelsti, it was suspended. In 2009, the company Lexington Holdings made a proposal to fund a new metro line, and it was accepted. Potato Transit Authority Global Operations (PTAGO) made an offer for planning of the line, and Waterline Operations Group made an offer as well. All three offers were combined into the consortium SebelMet S.A, with each company owning 1/3 of the consortium. Planning begun in 2010, with a heavy rail metro being planned. Surveying begun in April 2011, with construction starting in December 2011.
Opening
The first stretch of track from Baia Sul to Port Sebelsti-Central station, opened as a trial service on January 16, 2016. The service ran from 10:00-17:59 on Mondays-Fridays. The service was frequently cancelled, until the full opening of the system from Baia Sul to Port Sebelsti International Airport on April 8, 2016. The system was inaugurated with the then-governor of the Federal Capital Region, now the President, BaconHairBlox, in attendance.
