Montpelier Kimberley Pelo (January 25, 1949 – November 30, 2024), better known by her alias M.K. Pelo, was a Labubloxian politician, advocate and author who served as the first president of Labublox with her tenure spanning from 1980 to 1984. Pelo was the former chairwoman and founder of the LIM from its foundation in 1974 to 1984, when her term officially ended. She played a major role during its early years. Pelo was also known for writing numerous books throughout her later political career such as Before Politics (2012), known for its neutral tone, that aims to guide new politicians of widely different views around the world. She was also known as the 'Founding Mother of Labublox', because she was the most prominent and important pioneer of Labublox's journey to independence from the Bloxian Empire.
Montpelier Kimberley Pelo was born in early 1949 in a small town at the eastern coasts of Labublox. Following her entry into public life in the 1970s, Pelo became one of the central figures in Labubloxian politics during the country’s pre-independence and early presidential era. She was one of the more prominent and persistent independence activists who believed in the potential of Labublox’s independence. She gained recognition shortly after founding the LIM political party in 1974 and was elected president in 1980, becoming the first person to hold the office as the country gained independence a day before.
Pelo’s term concluded on August 19, 1984. After leaving office, Pelo remained active as a public advocate and author. A few years after leaving office, she made her debut book, Independence of Labublox (1989), based on the effort done by her and others to help Labublox gain independence. Pelo continued writing and remaining present in public events until her termination in late 2024 out of lung cancer.
Early life and education
Montpelier Kimberley Pelo was born on January 25, 1949, in Kampong Seri Pangkalan, a coastal settlement in Labublox, which was then a part of the Crown Colony of Labublox, a colony of the Bloxian Empire. She was born to Montpelier Alphonse Pelo, a Roblox War II veteran, and Penelope Kimberley Pelo, a school-teacher. Pelo was raised in a working class household during a period of post-war recovery for the nation. The area Pelo grew up in was densely populated and socially diverse, with traditions emphasising on local governance and racial harmony. In her 2017 book M.K. Pelo, she wrote that her upbringing exposed her early to community organization and informal political discussion, especially through local councils and neighborhood gathering. Pelo had a great relationship with her older brother, Upton Kimberley Pelo, although her brother eventually entered a musical career. However, details of Pelo’s early life remain limited. Groovie19, the oldest Labubloxian BloxTuber, even jokingly remarks that the details of Pelo's early life are 'lost media'.
Pelo, in her childhood, joined three different local public schools time to time in her hometown for her primary education, where she was described by former classmates as “reserved but attentive”. She eventually joined Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bloxtu Lima (SMKBL), a reputable and well-known secondary school located in what is now Labublox Timur, for her secondary education. Throughout her adolescence, she developed an strong interest in civic studies, ethics, and social organization, as well as vexillology.
In high-school, Pelo became highly involved in student discussion groups which were focused on governance and social responsibility. In 1967, Pelo enrolled in the Bloxian College of Labublox, now known as the National University of Labublox, which was a few kilometres away from hometown. In 1971, she had completed her formal education after receiving a bachelor's degree.
Life and career (WORK-IN-PROGRESS)
Pelo began her political career in May 1972, shortly after graduating from college, by campaigning and taking part in community speeches, with most of them being related to the idea of an “independent Labublox”. In 1974, she established the LIM political party. However, at that time, the party had limited national presence. She, and by extension, the LIM, staged the 1974 independence riots in Bricktoria.
She initially worked as a local volunteer for the Grand Avenue Auditorium to generate revenue for her party. This auditorium functioned as a venue for small pro-independence rallies and meetings with Bloxian colonial officials. Pelo was given the responsibility of organising these events. According to later interviews, she was responsible for distributing pamphlets and keeping attendance records for the auditorium. Pelo had also assisted senior members with scheduling and correspondence. After she was promoted to a senior member the following year, the LIM held a 60% share in the ownership of the auditorium.
