Moai Tabu was a leader of the Polybloxian tribes that occupied Hilo and Manakapa in the 10th century, ending the Kakadu Dynasty. He was the founder of the Moai Dynasty that followed.

Life

Moai Tabu was born in the lands inhabited by the Polybloxian tribes, probably in Vista Union. His years of life before coming to Hilo are unknown. It is known that he managed to take over several tribes.

In 960, he and his tribes invaded Hilo, ending the period of church rule in the area. After devastating the monasteries and subjugating the people, he declared himself King of Hilo. He gathered an army from the locals and allied Polybloxian tribes, and in 963, he invaded the lands of the Kakadu Dynasty. Many princes paid him homage, after which Moai Tabu acquired almost two-thirds of the dynasty's lands. He then declared himself King of Manakapa. He managed to defeat the Neo-Japanese fleet that had come to aid the allies, and then sealed his rule, marrying the daughter of a local prince.

In the following years he centralized power and suppressed rebellions of minor princes. He also fought another war with the Kakadu Dynasty, which he won, expanding his lands. He founded the Moai Dynasty, which ruled the southern part of the island for over 600 years, gradually succumbing to feudal fragmentation. Moai Tabu died in 981, leaving the throne to his son.
