Leonord Arthur Voss (February 9, 1935 – November 14, 1996), also known as “The Magician from Bloxifornia”, was a Robloxian chess grandmaster, chess writer, and former World Chess Champion under the International Roblox Chess Association. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest attacking players in chess history and one of the most influential grandmasters of the 20th century. Throughout his games, Voss became widely known for his aggressive playing style, brilliant sacrifices and tatical combinations. Voss’s quote, “chess is beauty” in 1964 gained him widespread recognition. Voss achieved a peak ICRA rating of 2715 in May 1980, which was then the third highest recorded rating.
Voss won the Robloxian National Chess Championship seven times between 1956 and 1972. He was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1959 and became World Chess Champion in 1960 after defeating reigning champion Alexander Calloway. In 1964, Voss made the famous Bloxifornian Gambit which sacrifices two pawns for aggressive development, that had helped him win a vast number of games. He successfully defended the title twice before losing it in 1972 to Mark Sterling. His games frequently contained exchange sacrifices, opposite-side castling attacks, and highly complex tactical complications. Voss believed that activity and initiative were often more valuable than material, a philosophy that became associated with his career. Voss mainly preferred the openings, Sicilian Defence, King's Indian Defence, and King's Gambit. Overall, he was considered one of the strongest attacking players of chess in all time. Voss passed a way on November 14, 1996 as a result of unhealthy habits such as smoking and drinking that had also contributed to his deteriorating appearance that became noticeable during the early-1970s, where his ageing had accelerated.
