Production History

Conception and Development

Dreams was originally a soap opera series created by at the time a 24-year-old Robloxian, Mark Sandoval. Mark was a struggling producer, writer and director who had his own production company "Mark Sandoval Film works". The concept existed when Mark was still looking for original ideas after four years of doing commissions for certain brands. He later planned on how the show was going to look and produced a pilot with R$400,000 budget. He later sent the pilot to various film festivals which won awards. The show later got an attention to Donald Avast who loved the idea in which they later signed an agreement to produce the show for at least 90 episodes and to have a 5-month deal to work with Avast Television to create new shows. Under the contract, it says that if the show did not reach at least 1.5 million viewers, the show would be cancelled, and the partnership will be terminated shortly. Mark wanted to hire the best people fohis show to compete with Young, Genaral Doctor and Lives. Both soaps that have big success and big fanfare.

Writing

The writing was difficult as it had many iterations during production of the original. Anna Gary was originally going to be the head writer of the show but left.

Due to the topics of the show being difficult, Josh Carter was hired but was again fired due to creative differences with him and Tom Hikes, a writer for the show from 1980-1995. The writing direction, at the time was difficult since it was a youth-focused show and not a soap opera (despite having some aspects of a soap opera) and most of the experienced writers didn't know what a youth-focused series was. However, Mark suggested to try and follow the current events of modern society (which, at the time was considered controversial) in which all the writers agreed and settled with the project's vision.

Direction

Originally, the show was going to follow about 5 young adults on a mission to succeed via excessive deception. However, this was rejected by Donald Avast due to the network wanting more "advanced" tv shows with a complex storyline. So, Mark, along with the then-director Jimmy Prenz, wanted the show to be set in a high school named (at the time) RoHive High School as he thought it would be the best place to start with. However, Mark did not want changes to his original vision. The hate between Mark and Jimmy was so strong that they had to settle in a board if they wanted it to be a high school set or a college set. The high school set had the most votes, but it was already too late. Jimmy Prenz left the production as director and left Mark Sandoval Film Works altogether. Since Mark did not want to spend too much money on hiring the best people, he later scaled back in case of vision a little and focus on his crew and cast.

Casting

When producing the pilot, there were a handful of cast members was from high school and looking for an acting career to work for in order to establish their career. However, some never made it to the series either due to toxicity, budget cuts or death. Anne Skype was not hired for the show, due to the fact that she was working as a lead actor in another movie. John Skies also never made to the final version due to the reports that he had raped Robloxians and exhibited pedophilic behavior in his 20s. Martin Jones never made to the final version due to cancer affecting his acting ability. In 1992, he entered the show as "Mike Lord".

Title Sequence Development

Early concepts of the title sequence were made in 1974. Originally, it was going to show the city of Robloxia with Shannon Is Crazy, a song by an unknown artist, as the theme song, but Mark rejected the plan and proposed a new idea; Mark would choose to let high school musicians play their original music while a bright light of lines (using their music) to play across the city. Most of the employees liked the idea and some criticized the idea. Despite this, Mark still continued the idea with hiring James, Scott and Mike play as musicians in the intro.

Filming of the title sequence

The original filmed the title sequence of all across the city with the park, to the cities and other locations to really show the city of Robloxia. The filming was successfully done without any issues. However, the real issue was with the lines Mark wanted. Shortly after the problem, they outsourced it to the 8-Bit Boys only consisting of 8 people working on the title sequence. Since 3D animation was limited at the time, it forced their scope to scale back causing some problems with the testing. However, despite this they did it successfully and got paid a R$500,000 Robux(dollars at the time) in return for their work. They also hired Kenny Takoradi to produce Big Dreams for their original music.

Music:

The production of the music is unknown. However, its composers changed from time to time. Kenny Takoradi was the original composer who wrote, sang, and produced most of the music in the 80s to the mid 90s. He stayed as a composer until 1993 due to newer opportunities for him to endorse on until 2007 we he returned to produce new music for the intros until his death in 2014. Mike Swiss was the additional musician for Kenny. He was later transferred to being the main composer in 1993 until 1996 due to the show being cancelled. James Howard was a composer for the reboot show in 1999-2007. He did not do as much music as the original composers until 2007, when he was replaced by Kenny Takoradi. The original music produced by Kenny Takoradi was later released on March 18, 1996, and re-released on January 11, 2014.

Broadcast

The show would later broadcast on February 12 1980, After, Show or Lose would be done airing. Originally, the show would air at 6:30pm but Donald wanted it to strive in the Primetime time slot in competition with General Doctor. The Show was later moved to 8pm and Genaral Doctor would move to 8:30pm. The Show would later be a success after the restructure of the timeslot. In 1984, The show, instead of airing at 8pm. It suspiciously aired at 7:30pm, the broadcaster would later apologize the audience for the mistake. 1994, The show would later move to 8:30 due to the producers request. It was controversial as most teens and kids would sleep around this time(More soon). In, 1997, TRCN would later acquire the show to air on May 9th 1997 at 3:30pm. In 2001, SCTV would later acquire the show, both new and old to air at 8pm(old) and 12pm.(new)
