Charlotte (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack album to the 2025 animated musical romantic film of the same name produced by Bloxy Animation Productions. The album primarily contains ten original songs with lyrics by songwriters Rose Williams and Tilly Young, while the deluxe version includes various outtakes and demos as well as its musical score by composers Lauryn Flowers and Aniya Carey. It comprises the vocal performances from Kamryn Saunders and Dexter Henderson, including Aidyn Holder, Devan Logan, Wade Jimenez, and Milania Steele.
During the early development on Charlotte, Broadway composers and lyricists Rose Williams and Tilly Young were hired to work on the score. Inspired by their previous works and wanted the songs to match those from the musical theatre genre, a book writer was created by Jenson Macdonald, to develop the musical numbers in order before storyboarding the scenes with writer Lilah Greer.
Background and development
In January 2022, Broadway composers and lyricists Rose Williams and Tilly Young announced that they were both working on a "highly secret project" and preferring it as a "musical," resulting in them leaving Broadway for a "short time" to work on the film, though they did not provide any additional information; the project would become Charlotte (2025). Sophia Nicholson, the film's director, had previously attended one of their musicals written by them around 2019. After rediscovering their music, shortly after the beginning of production on Charlotte, and wanting the film to be Broadway-inspired, Nicholson believed that the two were the "right choice" for the musical numbers. Following a discussion between Universal Pictures, they reached an agreement with the studio, to produce the songs.
When Williams and Young joined the production team by February 2022, they were given a sheet of paper with a plot outline and an estimated time of more than one and a half years to write songs, particularly for Charlotte and Aidan. They noticed that the themes included prejudice, and after reading one of the various goals from the title character, they began working on developing "Who I am Meant to Be," which was originally written as "Not the Same as Them," meant to explore Charlotte's feelings about being different and wishing for a good society to treat everyone as equally, including herself. After several rewrites to add conflict for the two main characters, Charlotte and Aidan, Williams and Young decided to expand on the film's ideas and messages to create "musical numbers that explore these themes to relate to a general audience, mainly females who feel left out or helpless." They used the character traits as references to further advance the "core" of each song and how their purpose are meant to be; the song "Is this Where I Truly Belong" highlights Charlotte's belief that with Aidan and the city's community, she founded the "perfect home" for her to belong to.
However, after a story reel in March 2023, the production team decided that more musical numbers were required to "fully highlight on who Charlotte and Aidan really were: an outcast girl and a hated-on Guest"; additionally, the team ordered that several songs that "didn't fit the general tone or sequence" be scrapped, including "You Can Count on Me," "The Joyful World," and "When Will the World Listen to Me." After rewatching the songs, Williams and Young felt that they needed "more emotions and expressions" because the majority of them were light-hearted, and that they were playing "too safe" with their music. As a result, they scrapped the majority of the songs, with the exception of "Who I Am Meant to Be", which was still in its writing process. The duo decided to "go very, very deep" into the storyline and attempt to find "meaning in each word for every character," which included creating a book musical, which had not previously been done for any musical films; the book was written by Broadway composer Jenson Macdonald around June of that year. Macdonald collaborated with the duo to rework all of the songs, as did director Nicholson and writer Lilah Greer. The musical styles of other artists, such as Toby Carlton, Thomas Bloxy, and Freddie Bloxy, served as inspiration for the reworked songs' writing process. Raining Tacos inspired "Simmer Down," a smaller-scale song originally titled "You Can Count on Me," to develop "that sense of joy within Aidan's personality and empathy for Charlotte."
Release
Following the release of Charlotte's final trailer in October 2025, Williams and Young announced that the soundtrack album, which included the musical songs, would be released on November 21 of that year, the same day as the film. Charlotte (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) was originally scheduled for release on November 28, 2025, but was pushed forward to November 21, which its original date was replaced by its deluxe version.
