Power struggled between the rival valleys led to civil war in Buutan, eventually leading to the ascendancy of a penlop (governor).
1907
The penlop was unanimously chosen as the hereditary king of Buutan.
1953
The king established Buutan's legislature – a 130-member National Assembly – to promote a more democratic form of governance.
