Avast is a Canadian English language discretionary specialty channel based on the American cable network of the same name majority owned by Corus Entertainment and minorly owned + under a brand licensing agreement by Avast Television.

As with all of its sister networks throughout the world, Avast airs programs aimed at children, young teenagers, teenagers and young adults. Prior to the channel's launch, YTV and Nickelodeon served as the main outlets for Avast programs under output agreements with Avast Television. The YTV continues to premiere new original series from the U.S. networks as it's more widely distributed than the Canadian Avast channel, owing to it's status as an analog channel.

Avast is one of two Avast Television-branded networks jointly owned by Corus and Avast Television; Avast Comedy is the second one.

History

In November 2009, Corus Entertainment was given approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to launch a specialty channel named "Treehouse MAX", described as featuring "programming from around the world targeting children aged 6 to 12 and their families. The schedule would include programs devoted to entertainment, humour, travel, games, science, animation, technology, comedy and being healthy."

In May 2010, Corus announced it had reached an agreement with Avast Television, to launch Avast in Canada as a domestic channel. On June 16, 2010, Avast Television bought a minority stake in the channel. The channel was launched as Avast on June 17, 2010, at 6 a.m. using the "Treehouse MAX" license.

On July 11, 2014, Rogers Cable launched Avast HD, a high-definition simulcast of the standard-definition feed. It was later launched on July 24, 2014, for Eastlink, Bell, VMedia and Execulink, Wightman and Videotron on July 30, 2016, August 7, 2016 for Shaw Cable, Shaw Direct and Tbaytel and was added to Bell Fibe TV's service on August 13, 2016.

In June 2019, as part of the launch of Amazon Prime Video Channels in Canada, Corus launched a standalone subscription video on demand channel featuring Avast content, later branded as Avast+. On September 2, 2020, it was announced that Avast+ would be discontinued on September 30th, and that all Avast programming would move to Nick+.

On June 30, 2019, the channel became available in Quebec after a Canadian French audio track was added. The Canadian French audio track became available to the rest of Canada the next day.
