The 2024 Highway 85 disaster was a major multiple-vehicle collision that took place on the early morning of June 22, 2024, on Highway 85 near Blockfield. Prior to the crashes, there was a police chase on Highway 85, and the suspect and cops engaged in a gunfight at the section's exit. The gunfire resulted in crashes, which were prompted by widespread panic and automobiles rushing to get past the firefight. Several drivers were killed as cops accidentally shot the suspect or purposefully shot them as their automobiles crushed them. The pileup involved around 300 automobiles across both lanes. 73 persons were killed, including nine officers and the suspect with 14 by gunshot wounds, and over 350 injuries were recorded. It was the most deadliest pileup since the Bloxburg pileup in 2022.
In the months that followed, nearly twenty cops were charged with unintended first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and third-degree murder. Most of the deaths were caused by oncoming autos colliding with other cars, crushing individuals to death. Some were said to have been locked inside automobiles for days. Few people were able to escape the situation and rush into other lanes. Following the pileup, huge resources and police personnel were dispatched to the area, and cleaning took many days, with Highway 25 blocked for a month.
The multiple-vehicle incidents caused traffic delays on Highway 85 and sparked a massive response from the United States and other countries, with numerous leaders offering their sympathies and President Roblox traveling to the tragedy site. Highway 85 reopened for two lanes in September of that same year.
