The 2016–2017 Davidson riots were a series of major protests and violent civil disturbances that took place in Davidson, Wisconsin, between August 2016 and July 2017. The riots were initially resulted by public opposition to policies introduced by then-mayor Eric Miller. The social and political unrest escalated into one of the deadliest periods of urban conflict in Robloxian history, as stated by many sources. The riots resulted in a total of 2,572 deaths and 4,102 injuries, alongside widespread destruction such as shootings, fires and explosions across many parts of the city, including Davidson Town Square. The riots were labelled as “one of the darkest times of Davidson”.

The unrest began following the implementation of several controversial measures by the Davidson municipal government, including a 9 PM ban on social gatherings, the forced closure of small businesses, increased surveillance, and rising taxation. These implementations all happened under the mayorship of Eric Miller and these policies were widely criticized for restricting civil liberties and disproportionately affecting local residents. Public dissatisfaction intensified over time, leading to mass demonstrations in Davidson’s central districts.

By late 2016, protests had escalated into violent clashes between civilians and law enforcement. In December 2016, a major riot caused a significant amount of damage to infrastructure and commercial areas, while confrontations continued into early 2017. Reports indicated that the use of firearms during these clashes significantly contributed to the rising number of casualties. Alongside fhe protests, Miller was believed to have bribed other council members to pass controversial laws in the city. Based on reports by Robloxians who worked at the law enforcement, Eric Miller encouraged public service members to use lethal force against the protestors.

Background

Eric Miller became the Mayor of Davidson in 2015 winning 51% of the votes, despite previous controversy and speculations that he would impose strict rules, evident by several of his campaigns. During his tenure, he began proposing strict regulations such as the closure of businesses, the 9 PM social gathering ban, and increased surveillance, especially in private areas that disrupted privacy of residents. Miller allegedly bribed council members to pass his regulations. The controversial rules sparked riots, especially in mid-2016.

Course of events

During the few months before August 2016, some residents began leaving Davidson as they feared further instability and restrictions in the city. This led to local property prices to significantly decrease around this period. Independent shop owners were among the first to form public demonstrations as many claimed that they were given a notice of shutting down their operations less than 48 hours before the deadline. The 9 PM gathering ban especially caused major controversy but became stricter by late 2016 with random patrol checks and immediate detention. In September 2016, Miller gathered a group of 200 activists in a room and imprisoned 73 of them, with rumors and small pieces of evidence suggesting that he bribed the law enforcement and local courts to agree. During the peak unrest in late 2016 and early 2017, there were major power outages, communication blackouts and internet issues throughout the city due to the violent clashes causing damages.

The Davidson Town Square became the main center of “chaos” as there were often crowds exceeding a thousand participants, protesting against the local government. In November, a period after the situation reached national attention, the federal government was alerted about the issue with the president, David Baszucki being formally briefed, however they did not intervene, viewing the situation as a local matter than a national crisis, despite news coverage on the issue visible throughout most of the nation. By early 2017, fatalities exceeded a thousand and the Wisconsin state government was pressured by civilians and authorities to intervene. The state government began monitoring the situation, declaring a state emergency. The Wisconsin state government began launching multiple investigations surrounding Eric Miller, which led to his impeachment in July 2017.

Public reactions

The 2016–2017 Davidson riots brought widespread reactions from Robloxia nationally, from residents, media and commentators. Locally, many citizens expressed outrage at Mayor Eric Miller’s policies, particularly the 9 PM curfew and the forced closure of small businesses. Many residents described the city of having an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty causing many to move out. Several residents who had moved out before the riots started called themselves "lucky". Citizens debated whether Miller’s strict measures were intended for public safety or personal political gain. National media coverage made these local reactions more visible portraying Davidson as a city in crisis and framing Miller’s administration as a central cause of the violence. Many commentators debated the responsibilities of local versus federal authorities, with some blaming the federal government for delayed intervention and others emphasizing the mayor’s role in escalating tensions. By the time the Wisconsin state government declared a state of emergency, political pressure rose and the topic shifted to who was accountable.
