On May 18th, 1967, a 20 ft flood erupted upriver and straight into the town of Appaport. The flash flood caused drastic damage to the city, as it came straight over the brick flood retaining walls after weakening them severely and splashing a spillage of water straight into the downtown area of the town. The flood killed over 897 civilians in the town and wounded over 2000+ others from debris, water, and other items crashing through the street.
Appaport
Appaport is a small town situated along a river situated 30 minutes south of Jarison, and 1 hour and 30 minutes away from Palm County. The town was settled first in 1907, as part of a route connecting Jarison and RoCity. Further development plans led to the small town situated upon a river being built, with the town extending up into the foothills of the hill it was stationed on. The population quickly rose in the town, and by 1967, it had reached 17,000 people in total, with shops being lined up along the main street, which was protected by a retaining wall. Due to the towns position relative to the river, the river sent constant barrages of water at the town during storms.
The day
That day, rain was barraging the town with rain reaching over three inches high. A huge storm was passing overhead as wind bellowed the town. It was a Thursday in the city. Most people were at school or work, running errands, or staying inside due to the intense rain. At around 4 PM, huge water waves bashed against the retaining wall, weakening it more. The wall was getting extremely weak as a consequence of bad maintenance. At around this time, traffic was at its worst, as kids were picked up from school and people returned home from work. The water got higher, as eventually, the retaining wall caved in on itself in a catastrophic failure.
Flood
The 10 ft tall, brick retaining wall slammed directly onto cars in the middle of the street as a huge swath of water flooded over it, reaching around 15, to 20, feet high, landing directly on busy intersections. As one part of the wall collapsed, the rest followed in a cascading system failure. Cars were immediately tossed into shops and flipped with people inside with no way out. A huge 20 ft surge of water flooded directly up the main street pushing everything in its path down the road. Travelling over 30 mph, the floodwaters wiped out cars, people, and broke the windows of shops leading to total disaster. The flood surged into higher levels of the city, causing extreme damage. People at intersections were trapped and eventually killed by drowning in their cars. Several things were ripped off their foundation and flowed with the surge, as the wave cascading through the main road had several telephone poles, bricks, and other sharp and flammable material moving through it. Eventually, the water cascaded out of the city after around 5 minutes of destruction, taking debris, people, cars, and parts of houses with it as they were strayed across the riverbed and shores violently. In the aftermath of the disaster, over 800+ people had been washed away and over 2000 were injured from the vast amount of debris and fire which had erupted following the flood. The weather died down later that night and immediate aid was sent to the town.
Now, Appaport has only 18,000 residents, and there are several memorials dedicated to the day.
It became the 12th deadliest flood in Robloxian history.
