The 1887 Robbery of Kanoyaza Military Post was a major armed raid carried out by a group of mounted bandits against a Robloxian military installation located near the town of Kanoyaza, in the Kionne Republic, Robloxia. The incident occurred on May 20, 1887, and is widely regarded by historians as one of the most brazen and violent attacks on a government military post during the late 19th century in north western Robloxia. The robbery resulted in the theft of a substantial cache of firearms, ammunition, military pay, and supplies, as well as the deaths of five Robloxian soldiers stationed at the outpost.
The robbery was orchestrated by a loosely organized gang of outlaws led by notorious bandit Merritt "Red" Calloway, a figure already wanted in multiple jurisdictions across Robloxia for theft, armed robbery, and assault. Calloway’s gang, numbering approximately 12 horsemen, approached the isolated Kanoyaza Military Post under cover of night. Armed with bolt-action rifles, revolvers, and dynamite charges, the bandits overpowered the small garrison of soldiers stationed at the post’s armory and supply depot.
After a brief but deadly skirmish, in which five soldiers and two of the bandits were killed, the remaining defenders were captured and tied up. The attackers then proceeded to loot the post, seizing an estimated R$21,000 worth of military pay chits and bullion, along with over 150 firearms, including model 1885 breech-loading carbines and several cases of revolvers. The raiders also took large quantities of ammunition and food rations intended for the 14th Robloxian Cavalry Regiment stationed elsewhere in the Kionne Republic.
Background
During the 1880s, the Kionne Republic, then a relatively remote and sparsely populated state in Robloxia’s western territories, experienced frequent clashes between local militias, criminal gangs, and displaced groups of settlers following the Robloxian Civil War. Military installations such as the Kanoyaza Military Post were often small, poorly fortified outposts meant to secure supply lines and provide protection for trade routes connecting Lobbett City, the state capital, to towns further west. However, the isolation and limited manpower of these posts made them vulnerable to organized raids by outlaws and bandits operating in the region. Merritt Calloway’s gang, active in the borderlands of Kionne Republic and neighboring Roregon, was responsible for a string of stagecoach robberies, cattle thefts, and assaults throughout the mid-1880s. By 1887, the group had grown more audacious, reportedly acquiring surplus weapons from disbanded rebel militias and recruiting disenfranchised laborers, deserters, and other fugitives.
The Robbery
On the evening of May 20, 1887, Calloway’s gang made their approach to Kanoyaza Military Post, taking advantage of the post’s limited patrol schedule and the absence of its commanding officer, Captain Howard DeBray, who was away inspecting a nearby road garrison. The bandits encircled the post’s perimeter and launched a surprise attack shortly after midnight, using dynamite to breach a storage shed adjacent to the barracks.
The initial explosion caused confusion among the soldiers, who were quickly overpowered in close quarters. According to contemporary newspaper reports from the Kionne Gazette, the bandits shot several soldiers attempting to mount a defense, while others surrendered. Within thirty minutes, the outlaws had secured the armory and pay office, looting it of valuables and military stores. Eyewitness accounts later provided by surviving soldiers indicated that Calloway personally oversaw the collection of military payroll and gave orders to set fire to the post’s supply depot to hinder pursuit. The gang then fled on horseback towards the Tallgrass Range, evading capture.
Aftermath
The robbery stunned military and civilian authorities throughout the Kionne Republic. Governor Eli Barnes declared a state of emergency in the western counties and authorized the deployment of state militias to pursue the raiders. Over the following weeks, scattered clashes occurred between Robloxian cavalry units and suspected members of Calloway’s gang. Several outlaws were reportedly killed in these engagements, but Merritt Calloway himself evaded capture and disappeared into the western territories.
The incident prompted widespread criticism of Robloxian military preparedness in the region and led to increased funding for frontier defenses. The Kanoyaza Military Post was rebuilt and fortified later that year, with additional troops assigned to secure vulnerable supply routes. The robbery also entered regional folklore, inspiring novels, plays, and oral legends throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
