On March 18, 1854, the Kingdom of Manakapa held its first free election in its history to choose its ruler after the death of King Pika III, who had no legitimate male heirs. Although the royal election was intended to be similar to the elections in Ro-Poland between the 16th and 18th centuries, only noblemen above a certain property and fortune qualification could take part in the elections, which was ultimately intended to facilitate the victory of the pro-Rogaulian faction. Pekelo Nohea secured victory over the other candidates with 4,671 votes. Next in line were Keanu Pika with 3,451 votes, Keanu Lewi with 1,890 votes, and Nainoa Iokepa with 1,347 votes. The remaining candidates did not receive a significant number of votes. The result effectively meant a victory for the reformist faction and set the stage for the War of 1854 and the intervention of Rogaulia, Bloxia, and Netherblox, leading to the dissolution of the Kingdom of Manakapa.
