Karnak is a secluded Antarctic fortress and research facility owned by Adrian Veidt.
History
As Antarctica is owned by no nation, Adrian Veidt took with him three Viet Cong refugees where they were safe during the purge sweeps of Vietnam.[1]
Upon returning to Karnak after securing his plan for world peace, Veidt lectures his Vietnamese servants on the origins of his superhero persona. However, Veidt also poisons all three men and opens the dome of his vivarium, letting in the frigid air, killing all the life within.[2]
Veidt executes his grand scheme to avert global nuclear war. Having concluded that humanity will only unite against a perceived external threat, Veidt teleports his genetically engineered, telepathic "Alien Monster" into the heart of New York City, and resulting in mass destruction and loss of life. By fabricating an existential threat, he effectively manipulates world powers into ceasing hostilities and working toward cooperation and peace.
The facility also serves as the location for Veidt's confrontation with Rorschach, Nite Owl II, Silk Spectre II, and Doctor Manhattan. When confronted about his actions, Veidt reveals that he already enacted his plan before they arrived.
Veidt, using his pet lynx, Bubastis, tricked Doctor Manhattan into entering the Intrinsic Field Subtractor, attempting to destroy his former colleague.[3]
Layout
Karnak is a vast and opulent complex, comprising multiple buildings and serviced by a small landing strip.
Dark marble obelisks, streaked with rolling purple highlights, mark the entrance to the fortress, which houses an array of uniquely themed rooms, inspired by ancient Egyptian motifs.[1] Notable among them are a sprawling gymnasium[1], an expansive dining hall, a chamber featuring a massive pool, and another lined with a wall of television monitors—allowing Adrian Veidt to observe global news and events—adorned with a mural depicting Alexander the Great cutting the Gordian knot[2]. Additionally, the fortress includes a meditation chamber centered around an intricate orrery.[3]
The complex also features a vast vivarium—a colossal glass dome that shelters a thriving vivarium, preserving diverse plant and animal species despite the extreme external climate.
To safeguard his plans, Veidt installed eight tachyon generators around the complex, supplemented by another eight in orbiting satellites. These devices interfered with Doctor Manhattan’s ability to perceive the future with clarity.[3]
Karnak also housed an Intrinsic Field Subtractor, similar to the one Jon Osterman worked on at Gila Flats before the accident that transformed him into Doctor Manhattan.[3]
