HBO Timeline

Industrial Rebirth

Following Doctor Manhattan’s departure from Earth on October 19, 1985, amid public accusations that he caused cancer, and the Dimensional Incursion Event two weeks later, public trust in science collapsed. Conspiracy theories proliferated, linking both events to Doctor Manhattan and the dangers of advanced technology.

Fear of radiation and so-called "Manhattan-synthesized" power led to the widespread rejection of electronics and modern energy sources. Citizens destroyed computers, appliances, and any lithium-powered devices, crippling major industries and accelerating economic decline across much of the United States.

As advanced technology was abandoned, society reverted to older energy systems. Detroit, with its entrenched fossil fuel–based industrial infrastructure, experienced an unexpected economic resurgence, positioning the city as a center of post–Dimensional Incursion industrial production.[2]
