This sound effect was originally part of the Major Records Sound Effects Library from Valentino, but has since gone out of print after Valentino Music shut down in the early 2010s.

This recording is presented as the reception of a Morse distress signal, but the decoded text does not actually contain the international distress call SOS (... --- ...). Instead, it consists of several grouped letter sequences that resemble encrypted or intentionally fabricated traffic rather than an authentic emergency transmission. The individual groups can be interpreted as follows:

  • NFQZH: A five-letter code group with no recognized procedural or operational meaning. Its format resembles the random cipher groups commonly used in encrypted radiotelegraph communications.
  • ANXITL: Another six-letter code group lacking any known Morse abbreviation or standard radio significance. The sequence is structured like an encrypted message block rather than plain-language text.
  • AC: A short two-letter group. Although AC appears in numerous technical and military abbreviations, it has no established meaning as a standalone Morse procedural signal in this context.
  • RTAM: A four-letter code group with no documented radio or telegraph significance. It may have been chosen simply to imitate authentic message traffic.
  • MSBD: Another encrypted-style code group. The balanced mixture of dots and dashes produces a convincing Morse rhythm without conveying meaningful information.
  • KNOUYW: A six-letter sequence that superficially resembles an English word but does not correspond to any recognized procedural term or abbreviation.
  • GFQZSPXIT: The final and longest code group, consisting of nine letters. Its construction closely matches the format of cipher text generated for military or intelligence communications, although it has no known decipherable meaning.

Taken as a whole, the transmission bears little resemblance to a genuine SOS distress message. An authentic emergency call would normally begin with repeated SOS groups, followed by the vessel or station's callsign, position, nature of distress, and any additional emergency information. Instead, this recording presents a series of random code groups that imitate encrypted Morse traffic while omitting the defining characteristics of real distress communications. Despite its title, the effect functions more as a generic Morse reception than as an accurate recreation of an SOS transmission, making it suitable for dramatic scenes involving mysterious or unidentified radio signals rather than authentic maritime or aviation emergencies.
