a picture of Southern Pacific Daylight no. 4445 (the engine responsible for the recording), in a unknown location and date.
This is a rare sound effect that can be found on the Standard Sound Effects Library, which was made by Standard Radio Transcription Services Inc. The whistle heard in this recording is from a Hancock 3 chime steam whistle that was recorded from a Southern Pacific GS-4 locomotive, specifically #4445.
Most people thought it was from Texas & Pacific #610 since her whistle sounds nearly identical to the ones from this recording. but it was #4445's whistle because the sound effect is from courtesy of Southern Pacific Railroad.
Judging by how the pattern of the whistle goes, it's likely that #4445 was going through a railroad crossing.
