This is a Skywalker Sound effect. The sound was created by animals that had respiratory issues because the D-Rex had a deformed appearance. So, sound designer Tim Nielsen used the sounds of animals with the same symptoms, including French bulldogs and pugs. Other animals, such as lions, alligators, elephants and walruses were thrown into the mix. Tim Nielsen said that he wanted the D. rex to sound sad, as it shouldn't exist. The executives asked not to have the mutant constantly open its mouth and roar every time it appeared onscreen, as it was not scary.
