Kuromukuro is a Japanese mecha sci-fi anime series made in 2016, created with P.A. Works to celebrate its 15th anniversary. It blends feudal Japanese history with futuristic alien battles, following a reawakened Sengoku-era samurai and a modern high school student who team up to pilot a mysterious, ancient artifact.

Storyline
The story centers around the Kurobe Dam in modern-day Japan, where a United Nations research institute was built to study ancient artifacts unearthed decades prior. When an extraterrestrial force known as Efidorg invades Earth, a young samurai named Kennosuke Tokisada Ouma, who has been asleep in a mysterious pod since the 16th century, reawakens. He accidentally biometrically synchorizes with Yukina Shirahane, a local high school student whose mother directs the UN research team, and the two must pilot a stolen alien mecha called the Black Relic (Kuromukuro) to defend the planet.
