The recording captures an extended and emotionally intense exchange between a distressed woman identified as “Sandy” and police dispatchers over a stolen police radio channel. When broken down, one can understand the context: Sandy has reportedly stolen a Houston police vehicle and is driving through Houston while communicating directly with dispatch. Throughout the recording, she repeatedly expresses hopelessness and a desire to die, while dispatchers attempt to calm her down, learn her location, and persuade her to stop safely. One dispatcher reassures her that officers are more concerned about her wellbeing than recovering the vehicle, emphasizing that they want to get her help rather than harm her.
During the conversation, Sandy reveals details about her personal life, including having children and feeling deeply disillusioned with both her life and law enforcement. Dispatchers continue trying to build trust, asking about her family and encouraging her to think about her children. Sandy, however, repeatedly rejects their attempts at reassurance and states that she does not believe the police will help her. She also references wanting officers to kill her if they locate her, suggesting a dangerous and emotionally unstable situation.
As the recording progresses, other officers and dispatchers coordinate efforts to locate her vehicle. Units begin reporting possible sightings near major freeway interchanges, including references to Interstate 10 and U.S. Route 59. Eventually, officers determine that Sandy has crashed near a freeway split and remains inside the vehicle. Aerial units (“Fox”) provide updates from overhead while ground units move into position. Dispatchers continue attempting radio contact with Sandy while officers report that she is still inside the car and trying to move it.
Intermittently throughout the final pursuit, Morse code identification bursts can be heard over the radio system. These include sequences such as “-.” (interpreted as the letter “N”), “-.- -.- -.. .....” (“KKD5”), “-.- -.- -.. ....- ----. --.” (“KKD49G”), “-.- -.- -.” (“KKN”), “-.-” (“K”), “-.- -.- -.. ....- ----. --” (“KKD49M”), and “-.- -.- -.. ....- ----. -----” (“KKD490”). These short coded bursts are likely automated station identifiers, repeater signals, or radio system telemetry commonly heard on older analog communication systems during active transmissions.
The final portion of the recording becomes increasingly urgent. Officers report having Sandy at gunpoint, and dispatch informs units that media crews are already arriving at the scene. Moments later, dispatch announces that shots have been fired and that the suspect is down. Although some transmissions initially state that Sandy is “in custody,” the accompanying description clarifies that she reportedly exited the vehicle with a knife, officers opened fire, and she died at the scene shortly afterward.
As of 2026, the recording is widely recognized online as a dramatic example of real police scanner audio from the early 1990s, documenting a prolonged crisis situation in Houston involving a stolen police vehicle, a suicidal individual, a freeway pursuit, and a fatal confrontation with law enforcement.
Sound Effect Description
WARNING: This recording contains profane language! This recording is from my police scanner. The incident happened around the early 1990's. A woman from Kansas was able to steal a Houston Police car and drive around town with it! In the mean time, the dispatcher tried to get information on her location on their radio system, but "Sandy" wouldn't comply, only cursing and condemning herself, her life, and the police. She eventually crashed into a freeway pillar, and got out of the car. Although you will hear them say "shots were fired", and she was "in custody", the truth is she revealed a knife, they shot at her, and she died at the scene. Very ironic considering she mentions in the recording, she wanted the police to kill her.
