This is a Skywalker Sound sound effect created by Ben Burtt. It debuted in Alien (1979). Ben Burtt was contacted by Ridley Scott to fashion sounds for his movie, including several sounds for a transmission beacon. Although most of these sounds were not included in the final film, some of that material would later end up in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) for the ghosts emerging from the Ark, as well as Blade Runner (1982) for Deckard's apartment.
