This is a sound effect that can be found Complete Collection of Steam Locomotives (Railway Dynamics on CD) 1 (Japanese: 蒸気機関車全集 (Railway Dynamics on CD) 1) especifically in the "The Powerful Run of the C55 at the End of the Earth" CD which was made by Toshiba Records. The whistles heard in this recording are Japanese National Railway 5 chime whistles that were from Class C55 steam locomotives from the same company. it was recorded in August 2 of 1969 (Showa Period) and then released in 1990.

This sound was used by Akihiko Matsuda and only used for Galaxy Express 999. There was edited variant of the first whistle sound effect used for Big One from The Galaxy Express. The whistle's source recording are the 5 chime steam whistle that was once fitted to C55 Type Pacific, C55-30 (which was scrapped in 1974) while having a double header with the other locomotive C55-1 (which can now be seen at the Kyoto Railway Museum within the Umekoji Roundhouse exibit.) and also is the origin of other alternative whistle for Galaxy Express 999.

the recordings can also be found as part of a vinyl record titled "Railway 100th Anniversary - Train Whistle Forever - Record of Active JNR Preservation of Active Locomotives". which contains recordings of many of the locomotives currently preserved in Umekoji's Roundhouse, either when they were still in active service with JNR, or were in their early period of preservation. The full recording is of C55-1 and C55-30 departing from Asahikawa Station on the Soya Main line, pulling the 'Rishiri Express'.
