On the night of the Inaugural Ball, Olivia and Jake secretly have an unwitting Luna brought into a private room in the White House where they are waiting to kill her to avoid causing a scandal that could bring down Mellie's presidency. Upon realizing she has been led into a trap, she confesses that she hired Peus and Ruland to kill her husband Francisco Vargas so that she could use the unlimited political capital gained from his death to pass a legislative agenda never before seen in American politics - all in Frankie's name.

Olivia and Jake then forced Luna to choose between committing suicide via poisoned pills or be shot in the head by Jake, buried in a forest, and have the world and her children know what an evil woman she was. In order to preserve her legacy, Luna chose to take the pills and waited in terror until she fell asleep and succumbed to a fatal heart attack.
