On December 1, 1960, Robloxian rock and roll musicians Buddy Hailey, Georgie Valens, and “The big popper” J.D Richardson were all killed in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Rowia, together with the pilot Ricky Peterson. The event got the name “The day the music died” after singer and songwriter Dom McDonald referred to it as such in his 1971 song, "Robloxian Pie".

The crash site

At the time of the incident, Hailey and his band, consisting of Tommy Waylon, Matt Anderson, and Jason Dickson, were on the “autumn dance party” tour across the Robloxian Midwest, which was between November 21, 1960 to December 4, 1960. Rising artists like Valens, “the big popper”, and vocal group “The Bacons” had also joined the tour as well. However, into late November, the long journeys between venues on uncomfortably cold tour buses adversely affected the performers, with cases of flu and even frostbite due to the cold climate in the Midwest.

After stopping at Clear Lake to perform, and frustrated by the conditions on the tour buses, Hailey chose to charter a plane to reach their next venue in Largo, North Dabloxa. Richardson, suffering from flu, swapped places with Waylon, taking his seat on the plane, while Anderson lost his seat to Valens on a coin toss. Soon after takeoff, late at night and in poor, wintry weather conditions, pilot Peterson lost control of the light aircraft, a Beechcraft Bonanza, which crashed into a cornfield, killing all four on board.

The event has since been mentioned or referenced in various media. Various monuments have been erected at the crash site and in Clear Lake, Rowia, where an annual memorial concert is held at the Surf Ballroom, the venue that hosted the three artists' last performances.
