History
Suburban was founded on August 4, 1896 by Victor Carter, who was an explorer and architect known for founding a range of other smaller settlements. He claimed the farmland in southern Wisconsin with the intention of creating a planned residential community. The first settlers were mostly farmers, railway workers, and small business owners due to the land’s fertility and being located near the Piphi Railway. During its early years, the town consisted of a small number of wooden houses, a general store, a church, and a post office.
During the early 20th century, Suburban experienced a gradual population growth. New roads were constructed such as the Suburban Mainway. Electricity was introduced in the 1910s, and a the Suburban Elementary School opened in 1925. By the 1930s, several small family-owned businesses had become established along Main Street, while agriculture remained the largest source of employment for local residents.
After Roblox War II ended, Suburban experienced rapid development, mainly in residential zones. Returning veterans and their families settled in the town, leading to the construction of new housing estates throughout the late 1940s and 1950s, while there was also a large increase in births till the late 1950s. In 1954, the Suburban Public Park opened, while the main playground was constructed in 1956.
On September 18, 1962, a military accident involving the detonation of a radioactive device occurred several kilometres outside the town. While there was no structural damage in Suburban, radioactive substances had contaminated many parts of the town. Residents were advised to remain indoors for several days while emergency services monitored radiation levels. Cleanup operations continued for several years, and some agricultural land remained restricted until the late 1960s. Studies conducted in subsequent decades suggested that residents experienced slightly higher rates of certain illnesses compared with the national average, though improvements in healthcare and environmental restoration significantly reduced long-term risks.
In the 1970s, the manufacturing sector significantly grew. During the 21st century, Suburban continued to experience gradual population growth and investment in public infrastructure. The local government prioritised development on schools, roads, public transport, and community facilities that contributed to the town being relatively quiet.
Geography
Suburban’s municipal area covers approximately 1.7 km² and is divided into two main residential neighbourhoods connected by Main Street. The town contains several parks, tree-lined avenues, and low-density housing developments. Agricultural land surrounds much of the town, while the Piphi Railway passes along its eastern boundary, hundreds of metres away from the town.
