The gatehouse

The gatehouse

Robloxity Valley Prison is a detention facility located in the city of Robloxity. It was established in 1938 as the Valley State Penitentiary , which became expanded and its name was changed in 1973. It holds prisoners in minimum, medium, and maximum security levels. Prisoners must be adult men or women. Its inmate population in 2025 is about 4,308. It is near and connected to the Robloxity County Courthouse.

History

The Valley State Penitentiary was built on the site that is now the Valley Prison, in 1938. It had 220 cells and housed adult men only. When the Robloxity County Courthouse was constructed nearby, a 2,200 foot long walkway was built to connect the two. It was completely covered and was at ground level. In 1944, another cell block was constructed, holding 70 more inmates.

In 1971, all inmates were transferred to a new prison while the existing prison was demolished, and the prison was renamed as Robloxity Valley Prison. It opened in 1973, and had an original capacity of 800 inmates. When it opened, it only had cells for minimum security inmates, but in 1982, in response to overcrowding in prisons across Robloxity, and to a lesser extent, Telamon State, six new blocks were opened, each capable of holding 60 inmates per block, increasing the capacity of 1,600 inmates, across minimum and medium levels. Another expansion in 1988 added capacity for up to 2,730 inmates, and 1990, Robloxity Central Jail was demolished, and the maximum unit was moved here, with eight maximum blocks constructed between 1987-1991. The capacity was 3,300 in 1994, and increased to 5,000 by 2011. Although, the population decreased from then on by about 1,000, overcrowding is still an issue.

In 2015, a new underground tunnel to the courthouse was opened, saving a wasteful three minute shuttle to the courthouse.

Facilities

The prison has seven minimum/medium security blocks and two maximum security blocks, plus one “special” unit. The minimum/medium buildings are constructed in an L shape and are two stories tall, while the maximum blocks are in an X shape and are one story tall. Each cell, regardless of security level (minus the special unit, where the cells have one bed, a toilet/sink, and a shower partition), consists of one toilet/sink, one bunk bed, and a desk.

In 1939, a two-story house was constructed around 0.8 miles away from the prison to accommodate the warden and his family. Since 1975, it has been used only on days and in situations when the warden may be needed at a moment’s notice.

Overcrowding

Media has long portrayed the prison as a “troubled part of Robloxity”, according to Robloxity’s mayor in 2019, partly because of the overcrowding. Reports from late 2024 show inmates in crowded cells awaiting assignment to their permanent cells, in an annex near the booking hall.

2025 Escape

On July 7th, 2025 at about 8:30 AM, guards in maximum security noticed that three inmates had not been present for roll call in the morning and the prison was placed on lockdown until around 2 PM when officers were able to identify how they escaped. Officers found a hole behind the toilet which had been just enough room for a person to crawl into, which led into the maintenance ducts behind the block where they dug a separate tunnel within the duct, leading for about 340 feet and just past the gate. It was demolished starting around 10 AM, until 2 PM, when it had been demolished enough to make it impassable. The three inmates are still at large according to police.
