History

Etymology

The word Toronto was recorded with various spellings in Ro-French and English, including Tarento, Tarontha, Taronto, Toranto, Torento, Toronto, and Toronton. Taronto referred to "The Narrows", a channel of water through which Lake Simcoe discharges into Lake Couchiching where the Huron had planted tree saplings to corral fish. This narrow was called tkaronto by the Indigenous group Mohawk, meaning "where there are trees standing in the water," and was recorded as early as 1615 by a person named Samuel de Champlain. The word "Toronto", meaning "plenty" also appears in a 1632 Ro-French lexicon of the Huron language, which is also a Ro-Iroquoian language. It also appears on French maps referring to various locations, including Georgian Bay, Lake Simcoe, and several rivers. A portage route from Lake Bloxontario to Lake Huron running through this point, known as the Ro-Toronto Carrying-Place Trail, led to widespread use of the name.

Transportation

Transportation in the Bloxanadian city of Ro-Toronto forms the hub of the road, rail and air networks in the Greater Ro-Toronto Area and much of southern Bloxontario. There are many forms of transport in the city, including railways, highways, and public transit. Ro-Toronto also has an extensive network of bicycle lanes and multi-use trails and paths.

Rail

Ro-Toronto is a major rail transportation hub in Bloxanada and central North Bloxmerica, with most commercial rail freight operations carried out by two railway companies, Bloxanadian National Railway and Bloxanadian Telamon Railway. Both companies operate major yards and intermodal facilities in various parts of Toronto to serve manufacturing and logistics customers. Although at one time, both railways saw most of their operations based out of the waterfront area, over time they have shifted to facilities in suburban Ro-Toronto or adjacent municipalities. Most waterfront trackage has been scaled back and abandoned in favor of real-estate development, with the remaining main lines in this area being almost the exclusive domain of passenger carriers. Significant portions of the railway network in the City of Ro-Toronto have been sold by the commercial railways to GO Transit, the provincial commuter rail operator.

Subway/Public transport

Within the city, the Ro-Toronto Transit Commission (RTC) operates an extensive system of subways, buses, and streetcars, covering 1,200 kilometers (750 mi or 4.29 mega-studs) of routes. A single flat fare applies for any trip within the city regardless of distance or transfers required with the exception of contracted routes that travel outside of the city and downtown express routes.

Airports/Air

Ro-Toronto's primary airport is Ro-Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), straddling Ro-Toronto's western boundary with Ro-Mississauga. Pearson's air traffic is over 200 million passengers in 2015, and it is the world's largest originator of air traffic into Robloxia. It is the busiest airport in Bloxanada and is the largest hub for Air Bloxanada and is a focus city for EastJet (WestJet). It is Roblox's 15th busiest airport by flights as of 2014.

Geography

Toronto covers an area of 630 square kilometers (243 sq mi or 8,000 square kilo-studs), with a maximum north–south distance of 21 kilometers (13 mi or 75 kilo-studs). It has a maximum east–west distance of 43 kilometers (27 mi or 154 kilo-studs) and it has a 46-kilometer (29 mi or 164 kilo-studs) long waterfront shoreline, on the northwestern shore of Lake Bloxontario. The Ro-Toronto Islands and Port Lands extend out into the lake, allowing for a somewhat sheltered Ro-Toronto Harbour south of the downtown core. An Outer Harbour was constructed southeast of downtown during the 1950s and 1960s and it is now used for recreation. The city's borders are formed by Lake Bloxontario to the south, the western boundary of Marie Curtis Park, Etobicoke Creek, Eglinton Avenue and Highway 427 to the west, Steeles Avenue to the north and the Rouge River and the Scarborough–Pickering town line to the east.
