Julian Michael Davidson (born May 18, 1956), also known as "The Ice Master", is a Robloxian retired chess grandmaster and former World Chess Champion. He became World Champion in 1984 after defeating then-champion Mark Sterling and is regarded as one of the most accurate players in chess. Davidson held the World Chess Championship until 1990 and achieved a peak ICRA rating of 2804 in July 1988. Davidson was the first player to surpass in the 2800 rating barrier in the ICRA, at that year.

Early life

Davidson was born on May 18, 1956, in Sacramento, Bloxburg Valley. He learned chess from his grandfather, Harold Davidson (1904–1992) at the age of five and soon began competing in local tournaments. By the age of twelve, he had already defeated several National Masters in several local tournament games.

Career

Davidson received the International Master title in 1975 before earning the title of International Grandmaster in 1978 after achieving three grandmaster norms in international competition.

During the late 1970s and early 1980s, he won major tournaments in Bloxburg. His consistent performances earned him qualification for the 1983 Candidates Tournament, where he defeated several leading grandmasters to become the challenger for the World Chess Championship. Davidson challenged World Champion Mark Sterling in the 1984 World Chess Championship. Davidson won the championship by a score of 12½–10½, ending Sterling's twelve-year span as World Champion.

As champion, Davidson successfully defended his title in 1987 against Viktor Karelin, however was defeated in 1990 to Alexander Novak. During his tenure as the world champion, there was a steep increase in use of computers in opening preparations, which was also a result of the increase of the highest rating.
