On August 10, 1982, the Brianster Highway Bridge collapsed in a catastrophic event that lasted seconds. The cause of the collapse was mainly due to the anti-rust cleaners on the hangers, which caused the hangers to rip apart and cause the catastrophic bridge collapse. A total of 45 people were killed in the disaster, 40 people were injured, and 5 people were reported missing. The collapse led to a major revision of building codes throughout the entire state of Baine during the mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s.

Background

Disaster

10-second clip of the witness video of the collapse of the Brainster Highway Bridge, showing the mass snapping of the hangers.

During the morning of August 10th, 1982, people noticed that the bridge experienced some cracks during the night. During the night of August 9th, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 happened in the area, which also weakened the automatic anti-rust cleaners on the hangers. During the afternoon, the situation got even worse. Because, concurrently at 12:38:04 PM local time, the hangers at the Moorbeahawk entry of the bridge snapped. After a hangar snapped, people immediately panicked and tried to run to the Bluesand City entry of the bridge. But seconds later, a hanger snapped, separating the groups of people on the bridge. Some people tried to jump over it, but most failed and fell into the waters below. Then, every hanger, except for some, snapped, making a ton of vehicles and groups of people fall into the waters below and be killed, because of head trauma, drowning, or dying of injuries hours or days later. 11 wounded people died due to their injuries. In total, 45 people were killed, 40 were wounded, and 5 people were missing, which were 3 people below 18 and 2 adults.

Aftermath

Following the Brainster Highway Bridge Collapse, the building codes in the state of Baine were massively changed throughout the years of 1985 to 1992. Many laws were passed in local and Baine governments. According to the Baine state legislators, the Baine state government had decided to change building codes to make the bridges have "more safety features for the automatic anti-rust cleaners on some specific bridges to prevent an event from happening like this in the future."
