History
Chattanooga International Airport was officially opened on June 15, 1958, as a response to the growing transportation needs of Newton County. Initially a small facility with one terminal and a single runway, the airport expanded significantly during the 1970s and 1980s as Chattanooga's population and economic importance grew. By 1985, it had added a second runway and modernised its passenger terminal to handle increasing air traffic.
The 1990s were a decade of further upgrades, including a state-of-the-art cargo facility to support the city's candy and chocolate exports, as well as its tech industry. In 2008, the airport underwent a major renovation, introducing eco friendly technologies such as solar-powered terminals and energy-efficient lighting systems. The Chattanooga Terminal Expansion Project in 2020 added additional gates, a new concourse, and improved service for passengers, further improving the airport.
