An Empty Shore is a 2021 Robloxian psychological drama film directed by Shane K. Draper and written by Lena Marsh. Produced by Eastpoint Motion Works and distributed by Ironwave Films, the film stars Ava Greer, Marcus Linfield, and Julian Kross. Set against the backdrop of a remote, decaying coastal town, the story follows a grieving mother’s desperate search for answers following her teenage son’s sudden disappearance. Blending minimalist suspense, character-driven drama, and eerie small-town mystery, An Empty Shore earned attention for its atmospheric cinematography, restrained performances, and meditative pacing.
Released on August 6, 2021, across Robloxia, the film received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its quiet intensity and Greer’s deeply emotional performance. However, audiences were somewhat divided on its deliberately slow pace and open-ended conclusion. Despite mixed commercial expectations, An Empty Shore performed modestly well at the box office, grossing R$48.7 million against its R$22 million production budget. The film later secured multiple nominations at the 2022 Robloxian Film Awards, including Best Actress for Greer and Best Director for Draper. In the years since its release, An Empty Shore has gained a niche cult following, particularly among enthusiasts of Robloxian indie cinema and atmospheric thrillers.
Plot
The film follows Mara Delane (Ava Greer), a widowed schoolteacher from Broadwick, Roregon, whose 17-year-old son Oliver disappears during a solo hiking trip to the seaside town of Havenrest, an isolated fishing village on Robloxia’s rugged northwestern coast. Determined to uncover the truth, Mara travels to Havenrest herself, quickly encountering a community weighed down by its own unspoken tragedies and long-held secrets.
Upon her arrival, Mara is met with indifference and thinly veiled hostility from the townspeople, most of whom refuse to speak about Oliver’s disappearance or the town’s troubling history. She gradually befriends Samuel Wren (Marcus Linfield), a middle-aged fisherman who hints at a string of similar vanishings dating back decades. Mara also seeks assistance from Ezra Coyle (Julian Kross), a reclusive history teacher and town archivist, who reveals Havenrest’s reputation as a place where “things have a way of going missing.”
As she unearths old police reports, local legends, and fragmented eyewitness accounts, Mara is drawn into an unsettling web of half-buried memories and unresolved trauma. The town’s crumbling infrastructure, derelict docks, and fog-shrouded shoreline serve as a constant reminder of loss and decay. The film builds toward a tense, ambiguous climax at the old lighthouse, where Mara must confront the possibility that her son may have willingly disappeared into the town’s unyielding landscape, or that something darker was responsible.
Production
An Empty Shore was filmed on location in several small towns along the northwestern Robloxian coast, with principal photography taking place over eight weeks between March and May 2021. The production utilized practical effects to evoke the oppressive atmosphere of Havenrest, with director Shane K. Draper favoring natural lighting, sparse set decoration, and long, unbroken takes to heighten the sense of isolation.
Director Draper, known for his earlier indie films Shivering Pines (2017) and Lantern Cove (2019), stated in interviews that the film was inspired by real-life disappearances in Robloxia’s coastal communities and a desire to explore grief as a living, environmental presence. Composer Isla Byrne created a sparse, atmospheric score featuring minimalist piano motifs, bowed string instruments, and ambient soundscapes. The film’s modest budget of R$22 million was largely funded by Eastpoint Motion Works, an independent Robloxian studio specializing in psychological thrillers and character-driven dramas. Distribution rights were secured by Ironwave Films, which handled the film’s theatrical and digital releases.
