Mr. Alger Bloxerleye Smith (21 July 1890 - 30 June 1948) was a mountain climber (mountaineer), explorer and philanthropist that climbed approximately 28 mountains when he was alive. On 29 October 1929, he was known for naming a mountain after his last name, "Bloxerleye" because he was the first person to climbed the mountain and reaching its summit.
Alger Bloxerleye became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school. He made his first major climb on 27 February 1924, reaching the summit of Mount Bloxars.
Biography
Alger Bloxerleye was born to Thomas Bloxer (1864-1912) and Jane Leye (1865-1924) in Bloxburg Valley. His father, Thomas Bloxer had married Jane Leye after his high school graduation. But unfortunately, the family had to move to North Bloxifornia due to eviction. Jane Leye gave birth to Alger Bloxerleye after the birth of his brother, Aaron Bloxerleye five years ago.
Alger Bloxerleye was educated at North Bloxifornia Primary School and then Bloxifornia High. He finished primary school aged 11 or two years early, and at "Grammar" achieved average marks. His mother wanted him to go to a "good school" and he commuted by train, cycling to North Bloxifornia station before 7 am and returning after 6 pm.
He was initially smaller than his peers and shy, and did not enjoy "Grammar", where commuting barred him from after-school activities. He grew to be 6 feet 2 inches (188 meters).
He became interested in climbing when he was 16 following a 1906 school trip to Mt. Blox, after which he showed more interest in tramping than in studying and said he "wanted to see the world from the sky".
Expeditions
Alger Bloxerleye climbed approximately 28 mountains in his entire life of mountaineering.
In 1924, he completed his first major climb, reaching the summit of Mount Bloxars. Climbing brought new friends: Dayton Bloxy and Daniel McBlox became "the first real friends I'd ever had".
On 29 October 1929, Alger Bloxerleye decided to climb an unnamed mountain. After climbing, he went to a nearby village and asked the mountain to be named after his last name, "Bloxerleye". The supposed village held a voting to its residents to agree for the mountain to be named "Mount Bloxerleye". Out of the 837 people in the village, 691 people agreed while the others didn't. After a few week, the village decided to agree for the mountain to be named "Mount Bloxerleye".
